Drow Noble Quest

The Drow Noble quest sees you returning to your house fortress to exterminate a colony of mind flayers and retrieve the Web of the Chosen. For more information on the quest branch in general, see the quest article.

The Quest leader is located on the throne to the south. Both the portal and the downstair are located on the left-hand side of the map.

The throne on this level is special, as it belongs to those chosen by Lolth. Sitting on it while wearing your quest artifact brings up a menu allowing you to chose a variety of special effects. Each effect may only be used once. They are:

  • Order a genocide (uncursed genocide)
  • Grant an audience (create some random pets)
  • Demand tribute (make a wish)
  • Use your insight (identify a few items from your pack).

There are many worms and fungi scattered around this level, as well as Umber Hulks. The downstair is located randomly.

As with the throne on the Home level, the throne here will allow you to use its powers on demand after you recover your quest artifact.

This level contains some random monsters. The upstair in the outer ring, the downstair is located somewhere in the center.

The quest nemesis, the Elder Brain, hovers over a pool of water in the center of this level. Beware, for the brain casts two spells per turn and has a brain-sucking attack with a two-square reach. Once the brain is dead, you will need some way to get the bell of opening out of the pool. In addition to the brain, there are 16 mind flayers and 2 master mind flayers scattered about the level, as well as Umber Hulks and grimlocks.

A'gone, the current owner of the Quest artifact, is locked up in one cells on the edge of the level, her mind having been destroyed by the 'flayers. You will need Force bolt or a wand of striking to break the iron bars of the cells, so that you can slay her and claim the artifact for your own.

Entry

First time:

You arrive in familiar surroundings. You're (sic) house's fortress is 
close before you.  

The psychic call of your mother rings loud in your mind.

Next time:

Once again, you stand outside your house.

If already rejected twice due to bad alignment:

You have the oddest feeling that this may be the last time you
are to vist (sic) your house.

Quest guardians

If #chatting before the quest is complete:

"Oh, <playername>!  You're back.  Well, Mother wanted to speak with you."
"Oh, its (sic) you.  I thought you died in that dungeon."
"The life-cavern colony went silent cycles ago."
"I'd hate to see someone put a dagger in your pretty little back.
Perhaps you should consider an alliance with me."
"The Web of the Chosen represents the favor of Lolth."

If #chatting after the quest is complete:

"Oh, <playername>!  You're back.  Mother was just talking about you. She does
that quite a bit, now."
"You again?  I heard you were on your way to gehennom!"
"So it was the illithids that destroyed the life-cavern colony."
"(...You're Mother's favorite now.  You should leave, any ally 
you tried to make would just stick a dagger in your back.)"
"Is that truely the Web of the Chosen that I see you carrying?  YOU are the favored
of Lolth?"

Quest leader

When you first meet your quest leader:

"<playername>!  I am glad Lolth returned you to me.

"A great opportunity lies before us.  But first, I must see if 
you have the required abilities to sieze (sic) this chance."

When you return, having been rejected due to lack of experience:

"Once again you kneel before me, <playername>.  Are you ready know?"

This message is not currently used:

"Ah, back again, <playername>?  I will determine your readiness..."

When you are expelled from the quest for having failed the alignment test seven times:

"<playername>!  You have failed me for the last time!

"You are no longer my daughter!  Go now into exile!"

When being rejected due to lack of experience:

"%p, you are yet too inexperienced to withstand the demands of that
which I need you to do.  An An'kin might be able to do this thing.

"Return to me when you have learned more, daughter."
"<playername>, you are yet too inexperienced to withstand the demands of

When being rejected due to having worse than pious alignment:

"You have strayed, <playername>!  You know that Lolth requires
that we maintain a pure devotion to things chaotic!

"Return when you have purified yourself, and not before!"

When finally assigned the quest:

"You are indeed ready, <playername>.  I shall tell you what has transpired,
and what you must do:

"A short time ago, the life-cavern colony went suddenly silent.
My greatest rival, sensing an opportunity for further glory,
sent her most talented daughter to the colony, the girl recently
taken by Lolth as her Chosen priestess.  Her mission was to 
learn the cause of the silence and to bring justice to those 
responsible.

"The girl failed, for that was the last anyone has heard of her.
I have been grooming you as her rival to the title of Chosen.
It is too late for you to best her in life, but you can still
prove your superiority.

"Go, travel to the life-cavern colony, learn the cause of the 
silence and bring justice to those responsible.  Recover
the Web of the Chosen and bring glory to our house, and shame
to my rival's."

Encouragement

If you subsequently chat to your quest leader, you are encouraged:

"Why are you still here?  Get on with it, or face my wrath!"
"Go now!"
"Others will also be seeking the Web of the Chosen."
"Let Lolth be your guide."
"Do not delay."
"That colony is an important food producer."
"Fungi grow freely in the life caverns."
"To infiltrate DRA-MUR-SHOU, you must be very stealthy."
"Go, my daughter."
"You can triumph, <playername>, if you trust in Lolth."

Locate and goal levels

When first entering the locate level:

You have arrived at the life cavern colony.  The smell of death is
heavy in the air, and you hear the crash of colapsing walls in the
distance.

When returning:

Once again, you descend into the life-cavern.

When first entering the goal level:

You descend into a weird place, in which the rough cave walls take on
the complex, wrinkled appearance of a humanoid brain.

LITTLE DROWLING, YOU ARE LOST.  FOR NONE BUT THE LOST COME TO 
DRA-MUR-SHOU, FRAGMENT OF PENUMBRA.  YOUR MIND, YOUR THOUGHTS
AND MEMORIES, BELONG TO US NOW.  YOU ARE LOST.

When returning:

Once again, you enter the wrinkled caverns of the illithids.

Quest nemesis

When first encountering the quest nemesis:

YOU SHOULD KNEEL.  FOR YOU STAND BEFORE THE ELDER BRAIN OF
DRA-MUR-SHOU, SEED OF PENUMBRA.

Upon further meetings:

ALL TIME IS ONE BEFORE ME.  THE MOMENT OF YOUR BIRTH AND
DEATH IS ONE TO ME.

And on the 4th and subsequent meetings:

SUBMIT.

When you have (artifact), but (nemesis) is still alive:

ABANDON YOUR SELF.

Discouragement

(nemesis) will occasionally utter maledictions:

GIVE IN TO ME.
REST.
GIVE UP.
WHY DO YOU STRUGGLE?
DO NOT BE AFRAID.
WE HAVE AND SHALL RULE ALL.  EVEN LOLTH HAS AND SHALL 
SUBMIT TO US.
YOU PROLONG YOUR SUFFERING.
TO WHAT END DO YOU STRIVE?
PENUMBRA HANGS OVER ALL.
WE RULED AND SHALL RULE ALL.

Victory

When picking up your quest artifact:

You fill with pride as you pick up the Web of the Chosen.

You shall succeed where your rival has failed, and claim the
Amulet of Yendor besides.

When killing the nemesis:

I SHALL HAUNT Y O U  T I L L   T  H  E   E  N  D    O   F   
T   I    M     E      .       .        .

When returning to your quest leader:

"<playername>!  You have succeeded!  I feared it was not possible!

"You have returned with the Web of the Chosen!

"My daughter, Chosen of Lolth, I know that great things
lie ahead of you.  Go now, return to The Dungeons of Doom
and your quest for the Amulet of Yendor."

When subsequently throwing the Web of the Chosen to Mother:

"The silver Web of the Chosen guards Lolth's champion
against lightning and acid, and reflects beams and
lessens the impact of magical spells.

"That you are its bearer brings great honor to our
house.  Go now, return with it to your quest for
the Amulet of Yendor?"

Post-quest

When talking to Mother after the quest:

"Welcome, daughter.  How have you fared on your quest for the
Amulet of Yendor?"

When talking to Mother after getting the Amulet:

"You have it!  You have recovered the Amulet of Yendor!
Now attend to me, daughter, and I will tell you what must be done:

"The Amulet has within it magic, the capability to transport you to
the Astral Plane, where the High Altar of %d resides.

"To activate this magic, you must travel upwards as far as you can.
When you reach the temple, sacrifice the Amulet to %d.

"Thus will you fulfill your destiny."
