A few months back, I wrote the Everything2 article on The Eyes of the Overworld. To write the article that appears on NetHackWiki, I basically just trimmed out the unprofessional bits of the E2 article (as well as things most NetHackers know, such as that Gehennom is incredibly maze-y). If anyone has a problem with this either way, I'll be happy to rewrite this article or include more from the E2 article. I'm pretty sure that the E2 copyright policy is that the noder (i.e. author) retains full copyright ownership, so it shouldn't be a problem. Eidolos 03:06, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

Eidolos! Your article single handedly rekindled my love of all things NetHack. Although I am still a fled noder, I love your work! --Kalon9999 03:23, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Symmetric vision

I am wondering why creatures can use their gaze attack on you when you are viewing them through a wall while wearing the eyes of the overworld. While I understand that the astral vision acts like the wall is not there the creature should not be able to see you in order to use its gaze attack http://img813.imageshack.us/img813/3565/52392019.png as you can see the babau stars into my eyes. Well how is he focusing on me if I am on the other side of a wall? Is there a rationale I am missing or is this a bug? Ndwolfwood 10:26, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

I guess it's a bug. There is a function "places you can see", but no function "places this monster can see". Usually, vision is symmetric, so it wouldn't matter if you should call the other function. I guess whoever later added the Eyes didn't think through the implications of asymmetric visibility. (Yes, later: monks were backported from SLASH'EM.) --Tjr 14:28, 24 December 2010 (UTC)
I think that's not the only instance of asymmetric visibility, just the worst. If a yellow light or other illuminating monster moves next to a monster with a gaze attack that is otherwise in the dark, it will suddenly become visible and thus able to gaze at you. The amount of light around you is irrelevant. Pretty sure infravision also counts as well. -- Qazmlpok 16:14, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

Rogue level oddity

The Eye's Astral vision's illumination function doesn't seem to work in the Rogue level. I haven't checked if monster/object location is similarly disabled. Does anyone know if this is a bug? I added a note to the Rogue level page regarding this and also made a discussion comment in the Astral vision page. -- 孟謙
