Welcome!

Welcome!

Hi, Cherokee Jack! Welcome, and thanks for joining NetHackWiki!

  • The How to help and Style guide pages are excellent starting points.
  • Special:Recentchanges is a great first stop, because you can see what other people are editing right this minute, and where you can help.
  • Questions? Need help? You can ask at the Community Portal, the forum, or on the discussion page associated with each article! Just remember to sign those posts with four tildes: ~~~~. That will expand to create a signature.

You can put {{NAOplayer|NAO player account}} on your user page to link to your NAO player account. Capitalization matters.

We are really happy to have you here, and look forward to working with you!

This is an automated greeting.

dNethack monsters in wiki format

Hello,

Here is a gist with all the monsters already in wiki format: https://gist.github.com/Chris-plus-alphanumericgibberish/2c3897261f2b42e71745

--Chris (talk) 22:31, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

Thanks! I will update the pages I've created as soon as possible.

Tiles

How did you get the non-vanilla tiles for the articles you've made? I also asked about getting non-vanilla tiles on the community portal, but I haven't gotten a response there, so I thought I'd ask the most recent person to upload such tiles. --Kahran042 (talk) 16:39, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

I don't actually have the tiles for dNetHack—the ones in the articles appeared when I created the info boxes. My guess is that PNG files for them have already been uploaded with names that the wiki matches automatically with the name in the "monster info" template. Most of the monsters I've done are included in Chris' new monsters page (User:Chris/dNetHack/Monsters), which shows their tiles already, so if a monster's tile is on that page, it's probably on the wiki already. All of the Noble role monsters seem to be up, too. I don't know about some of the newer monsters (like the hooloovoo) that have been added since the last "windowed" version.
That being said, it might be possible to make PNG files for the missing tiles from scratch. The patches I've seen include code for the new tiles they include, usually as a series of 16x16 blocks of letters that you copy into the "win/share/monsters.txt" file. That was how I figured out that the parrot in the Pirate patch has the same tile as the SLASH'EM one. I haven't seen the most recent source for dNetHack yet, but it may include patches for the monsters.txt file.
I've used Paint to make PNG files for a few of the tiles from the older patches, but I thought it might be best not to upload anything without permission. :-) --Cherokee Jack (talk) 00:34, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, the last time I released a graphical version was over a year ago now, and I haven't done tiles for anything since then :-/ --Chris (talk) 01:54, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
Truth be told, what I'm really interested in are the racial quest leaders, nemeses, and guardians from older versions of SLASH'EM. Their 16x16 blocks are in the source code, but I don't know how to make them into actual tiles. --Kahran042 (talk) 07:02, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
I was able to create and edit PNG files using Paint. I took a few of the PNGs that were already uploaded (e.g. Pirate brother.png) and compared them to their tiles in the source code, to figure out the color code, and then tried making PNGs for some of the tiles that didn't have them. I took a copy of one of the existing tiles, increased the width to 33 pixels (with an extra pixel for separation) and made a new tile in the blank space, getting the colors from the original tile. It was time-consuming, but I was able to make one for Mayor Cummerbund that way. --Cherokee Jack (talk) 13:31, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. Unfortunately, I use a Mac, so I don't have Paint. However, I have made text versions of the tiles using TextEdit. But hopefully your information can help someone out. --Kahran042 (talk) 16:19, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
There is a utility program included with nethack that converts the text tiles into images. tile2bmp, I believe. You have to compile it from the source, though. I have a compiled version already, if you post the text version of the tiles you want I can probably run it through tile2bmp for you.--Chris (talk) 18:57, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
Sounds good to me. Where should I post them? --Kahran042 (talk) 21:36, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
Anywhere's fine. Pastebin or gist or maybe on the wiki, if it isn't amazingly long. --Chris (talk) 22:39, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
I just put them on pastebin. Here's the link: http://pastebin.com/UxgvaKKp --Kahran042 (talk) 05:15, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
