  • <, >, < and > represent staircases and ladders. The gray characters are stairs and the brown ones ladders; the brackets pointing left lead upwards, those that point right lead downwards.
  • Press < or > to go up or down a staircase or ladder, or down into a hole or trap door you avoided. When asked for a direction, such as when applying a pick-axe or zapping a wand, use these keys to direct your action up or down.
  • Press < or > to go back or forward one page in a multi-page menu. This is supported by tty and curses interfaces; see Menu controls.
