In NetHack, the letter K serves the following purposes:

  • It is also used as a direction key if numpad movement is off:
    • Press k to move north.
    • Press shift + k to move far north.
  • If numpad is on:

Historical uses

In Hack 1.21 and Hack for PDP-11, which are based on Jay Fenlason's Hack, and from Hack 1.0 to NetHack 2.3e, killer bees used the k glyph, while kobolds used the K glyph. The Keystone Kop first appears in NetHack 1.3d, and from this version to NetHack 2.3e would appear using the K glyph in place of the kobold if the KOPS compile-time option was defined.

In NetHack 3.0.0, the other types of kobold are introduced, and all kobolds are moved to the k glyph, while killer bees are moved to the a glyph; the Keystone Kops' higher ranks are introduced, and the monsters retain the K glyph, though they remain a compile-time option.
