A partisan is a type of weapon that appears in NetHack. It is a two-handed polearm that is made of iron, and appears as a vulgar polearm when unidentified.

Generation

In addition to random generation, general shops and antique weapons outlets can sell partisans.

Watchmen and soldiers may be generated with a partisan.[1] Trolls have an effective 18 chance of being generated with a partisan.[2]

Strategy

The partisan has the lowest average damage against small monsters of all polearms, being tied with the fauchard and glaive. Its average damage against large monsters is also lacking among polearms: the fauchard is somewhat lighter in weight for roughly the same damage, while the glaive is only slightly less heavy, but deals better damage versus large monsters.

History

The partisan is introduced with all other polearms in NetHack 1.3d.

Origin

Partisans.png

A partisan, also known as a partizan, is a type of polearm that was used in Europe during the 16th to 18th centuries, and consisted of a spearhead with small pronged protrusions mounted on a long wooden shaft. The partisan was often used by infantry soldiers to fend off cavalry charges, with the protrusions used to catch, parry and/or trap an opponent's sword and disarm them. In profile, the spearhead of a partisan may look similar to other types of polearm, such as the halberd, ranseur, or spetum: among the partisan's distinguishing features are its spearhead being more likely to have a flat bladed tip, and its generally broader "prongs" having the single edge facing out.

Variants

SLASH'EM

In SLASH'EM, Yeomen start each game with a +1 partisan.

dNetHack

In dNetHack and notdNetHack, Ramiel is a lawful artifact partisan that has +1d4 to-hit and deals +1 shock damage against monsters without shock resistance. Pounding with Ramiel causes 3x3 shocking explosions centered on the target monster that deal 6d6 damage, while attacking a monster with Ramiel in melee when riding fires a 6d6 ray of lightning in the direction of that monster.

NetHack Fourk

In NetHack Fourk, the partisan is one of the few polearms that is not removed.

xNetHack

In xNetHack, the partisan is one of the few polearms that is not removed.

EvilHack

In EvilHack, a partisan can be created at a forge by combining a broadsword and a spear. This also applies to Hack'EM.

SlashTHEM

In SlashTHEM, in addition to SLASH'EM details, troll characters that are not Convicts have a 14 chance of generating with a partisan as their starting polearm.
