In [[dNetHack]], [[notdNetHack]] and [[notnotdNetHack]], the '''caveman''' and '''cavewoman''', {{monsym|barbarian}}, are two nearly-identical [[monster]]s (save for their gender) that are significantly altered from [[Caveman (player monster)|their appearance]] in ''[[NetHack]]''.

As with ''NetHack'', the caveman and cavewoman are [[lawful]] [[Human (monster attribute)|human]] [[Player monster (dNetHack)|player monsters]] corresponding to a [[Caveman/dNetHack|Caveperson]] [[hero]]: will have the [[role]]'s appropriate [[rank]] title for their [[monster level]], and they can reach level 30 like heroes can. Cavepeople are capable of tracking foes.

A caveperson has one weapon attack, and like Cavepeople heroes and other 'caveman' monsters, they will gain intrinsic [[speed]] at a minimum of level 7. They boast basic prowess in martial combat, and have [[physical damage scaling]] which grants hitdice-based bonuses.

==Generation==

Cavepeople are not generated randomly, and are normally created as peaceful towards lawful heroes before specific adjustments are made. They are only a valid form for [[doppelganger]]s to [[polymorph]] into, and can only be targeted for [[genocide]] if a Cavepeople hero [[read]]s a [[scroll of genocide]]—such a hero reading a cursed scroll while confused will instead create several cavepeople monsters of the matching gender adjacent to themselves.

Cavepeople [[corpse]]s can generate in [[graveyard]]s and within the [[Valley of the Dead]]. Cavepeople [[statue]]s can generate in [[cockatrice nest]]s and on [[Medusa's Island]]. A Caveperson hero killed by HP damage from a [[cockatrice]] or [[chickatrice]], or else killed by any form of [[stoning]], will leave a named caveperson statue behind containing their inventory rather than a named [[ghost]] and named corpse if a [[bones]] file is created. Statues and [[figurine]]s of cavepeople cannot be wished for by any means.

Cavepeople can appear among the [[Prisoner (dNetHack)|prisoners]] of the throne room on the [[Neutral Quest (dNetHack)|Neutral Quest branch level]], with one slot each corresponding to caveman and cavewomen.

Cavepeople can appear among the group of hostile player monsters that collectively constitute the second [[quest]] monster slot for [[Binder]]s and make up {{frac|18|175}} of the monsters randomly generated on the [[Binder quest]].

Hostile cavepeople can appear among the various player monsters placed on the [[Astral Plane]] during level creation.

[[Named]] cavepeople that are placed outside of the Astral Plane are given names derived from The Epic of Gilgamesh:

* The masculine names that can be chosen from are "Gilgamesh", "Enkidu", "Urshanabi", "Utanapishtim", "Shangashu", "Akka", "Birhurturra", "Lugalgabagal", "Sin-leqi-unninni", "Ur-Nungal", "Kushim", "Gal-Sal", and "En-pap".
* The feminine names that can be chosen from are "Ninsun", "Shamhat", "Siduri", "Enmebaragesi", "Pestur", and "Sukkalgir".

A caveperson is [[always generated with]] a weapon that has a {{frac|3|4}} chance of being a [[mace]] and will otherwise be a [[club]], and if they are not slated for "good" equipment they will be given a [[Leather cloak|standard cloak]], and [[sling]] and some [[rock]]s.

Cavepeople generated as prisoners will have the above items and a [[Leo Nemaeus hide]] among their belongings that are placed in the [[chest]] near the [[throne]].

Cavepeople generated on the Astral Plane are subject to the same armor and weapon replacement odds as other player monsters.
