In Nethack game terms, an emergency is a situation where your [[HP]] is less than 1/6th its maximum.

The first effect of this emergency is for it to be classed as a major problem when [[pray|praying]]. If your alignment and luck are not negative, and your timeout is expired then you will be healed by your [[god]]

The second effect of an emergency is usually to reduce the [[fail|failure]] rate of certain [[healing]] and [[escape]] spells. For a [[Tourist]] [[role]] however, an emergency makes spell failure more likely.
