Ladies and Gentlemen,

Nethack version 5 made public in 2026 by the Dev Team has at least one difference from Nethack version 3.6.7 of 2023, and from all previous versions such as 3.4.3, which seems frustrating.

According to several document sources consulted, a pet or a tamed monster fallen into a trap CANNOT BE LIBERATED by moving the Hero into it, this is, by the old method of displacing it out of the trap.

Then, how can the trapped Friend be liberated ? Is there a tool such as a ladder (if ladders exist) or another resource that could be used ? Or waiting for a number of turns, as it may happen to the trapped Hero ?

So far, documentation and Nethack fora consulted mention the problem but not the solution. This is important, because there is a military virtue called LOYALTY. The perspective of abandoning a Comrade still alive into the hands of the enemy, or to a slow death, is simply UNACCEPTABLE.

A Comrade-at-Arms IS NOT A TOOL, but a Companion of War who deserves sacrifice and for whom it is justified to kill or to die.

If not finding a solution to the problem, then it is better to avoid Nethack version 5 entirely and to continue playing the old versions, which for years have provided a UNIQUE enjoyment.

There is also the possibility of starting without pet and not offering edible food to a cat, dog or horse, but that solution would take away one of the most lovable aspects of Nethack, that of having a Companion.
