A monster's morale as well as your own is shown when applying a [[stethoscope]] to either yourself or another monster. [[Enlightenment]] will also disclose your current morale level. Encouraged monsters are more likely to attack a monster that is above their current level. While under the [[walking nightmares]] effect from wearing the [[War helm of the Dreaming]], and while afflicted by the [[Madness#Rage|rage]] a monsters' bonus damage from morale is fully negated.&lt;br /&gt;

The following effects alter morale:&lt;br /&gt;
* Being affected by a [[wage of pride]] reduces your morale by -9.&lt;br /&gt;
* Landing a critical vorpal hit with [[The Sky Reflected]] or [[The Amalgamated Skies]] while the 'resonant' [[mental edge]] is active. Nearby pets gain 0-8 scaling with sanity. Always 8 for [[Githyanki]] [[Kensei]] who have learned the last [[Zerth mantras|mantra]]. Nearby enemies will also be discouraged by the same amount pets are encouraged by.&lt;br /&gt;

* Attacking or being attacked by [[Stormbringer]] while the 'harvest' fighting style is active. For monsters of and above level 3, gain +3 morale. Else gain the monster's level as morale.&lt;br /&gt;
* Stormbringer's level drain effect while the 'harvest' fighting style is active. (+1)&lt;br /&gt;
* Monster being hit by a [[deep]] weapon's [[mind blast]] gain morale. The lower the weapon's enchantment the higher its mind blast damage. Below +0, monsters affected by the mind blast gain {{frac|damage|5}} as morale.&lt;br /&gt;
* Byakhee summoned through the [[Necronomicon]]'s 'summon byakhee' passage are generated with +5 morale.&lt;br /&gt;
* [[Invoking]] the [[Mad King's Crucifix]] increases morale by 8 + Enchantment + Skill (1, 2, 5 for Basic, Skilled and Expert, respectively.)&lt;br /&gt;
* Killing the [[Coven Leader]]'s [[familiar]]. (+8 monster morale)&lt;br /&gt;
* Being affected by a [[Ancient of blessings]] aura with no other valid targets. (-7 encouragement at most)&lt;br /&gt;
* Monsters that become enraged have a {{frac|3|4}} chance of gaining morale points equal to their difficulty rating, up to 20 at most. Otherwise, they will go berserk.&lt;br /&gt;
* [[Madpeople]]'s whisperer will occasionally buff the hero by 1d({{sfrac|100 - Sanity|5}} +1), up to at most 21.&lt;br /&gt;
* Being hit by an [[Elder brain]]'s mind blast deals 3d15 damage and gives [[telepathic]] monsters on the level a morale bonus equal to {{frac|3}} of the damage received.&lt;br /&gt;
* Using the 'kiai' shout ability as a [[Samurai]] or [[Kensei]], which lasts for the same amount of turns as the morale bonus. * The mind blast ability of [[Madpeople]] who are either at least level 28, or who are at least level 21 and have the 'twin dreams' [[Yog-Sothoth]] mutation [[studies]] monsters on a hit, and reduces their morale by the amount of damage of the mind blast (at least 3d15, up to 5d15 at XL 28 with the twin dreams mutation).&lt;br /&gt;
* Monsters who can sing (indicated by the 'MS_SONG', 'MS_INTONE', and 'MS_FLOWER' monster flags) have a {{frac|3}} chance of encouraging nearby hostile monsters, if they themselves are hostile. If they are tame instead, all nearby pets as well as the hero are encouraged instead. In either case, the amount of morale given is 1d({{sfrac|Monster Level|3}}+1). [[Aglaope]]'s song will encourage all hostile monsters on the whole level for 1d6 instead.&lt;br /&gt;
* Oona's singing has a {{frac|3}} chance of being a dirge that decreases the morale of affected monsters. If she is hostile, this will decrease your own morale as well. If she is tame instead, this will affect all hostile monsters. In either case, the amount of discouragement scales with her level (20), for 1d7 morale damage. &amp;lt;!-- code never reached. * [[Silvermen]] who are afflicted by any type of [[poison]] or [[disease]], or who poison a monster gain encouragement scaling with the poison's severity. Having a weapon coated in poison, dire poison or paralysis poison trigger its effects all set current morale to 8. Blindness poison instead sets it to 4, and filth-crust poison sets it to 16. Other attacks, from any source, that inflict disease will set current morale to 16. Attacks that inflict regular poison instead set it to 8.&lt;br /&gt;

* Monsters with a luck-draining gaze attack that use them to gaze at another monster will gain 1 point of encouragement, while their target is discouraged by 1, up to at most 13 encouragement or discouragement.&lt;br /&gt;
* Monsters with an 'unnerving' attack (chain devils, interlocutor devils, cuboids and rhombohedroids) lower your morale by the amount of damage inflicted.&lt;br /&gt;
* For [[Githyanki]] Kensei, using the 'repulse' move deals +1d15 for every 6 experience levels. Targets hit by the mind blast will suffer morale damage equal to the blast's damage.&lt;br /&gt;
* [[Cloudfaced]] [[Madpeople]] whose faces and shoulders are not covered may perform a morale-damaging wide gaze attack, reducing the morale of monsters who can see the hero by 1 point, up to {{frac|Insight|7}}.&lt;br /&gt;
* Monsters that kill [[Soldier mummy|soldier mummies]] have their morale reduced by 1d7 up to -13.
