[[阅读]]臭云卷轴会[[自动鉴定]]之，游戏会请求玩家选择其附近一定范围内的一个目标地块，卷轴会以该地块为中心，制造一片[[毒云]]，毒云的范围、伤害和持续时间取决于卷轴的{{cnlink|BUC}}。选择的地块必须在玩家的视野范围内，如果选取的目标不合法，卷轴仍然会被消耗，但没有效果{{refsrc|src/read.c|961|nethack=3.6.7}}。在[[混乱]]状态下阅读臭云卷轴不会影响其效果。

被诅咒的卷轴制造的毒云持续4{{波浪线}}6回合，未诅咒的卷轴制造的毒云持续6{{波浪线}}8回合，受祝福的卷轴制造的毒云持续8{{波浪线}}10回合。卷轴制造的毒云会在4{{波浪线}}6回合后开始消散，使得毒云的伤害减弱，之后每2回合再消散一次。受诅咒卷轴的毒云会在消散1次后即完全消失，未诅咒卷轴的毒云在消散2次后完全消失，受祝福卷轴的毒云在消散3次后完全消失。

只要你有魔法抵抗，毒云也可以用于在安全的距离击杀店主——毒云的伤害一般足以在店主用完魔杖的充能并发动近战攻击之前杀死他，还会迫使店主用携带的治愈药水治愈自己的失明状态。若店主无法看见你，他会一直待在毒云里。
