dNetHack roles
In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, the Silverknight, abbreviated as Sil, is a special role only accessible to a character that is the combination of the silverman race and Knight role. Silverknights start out in a "mired" dungeon and are unable to access any branches other than their quest at first. The Silverknight quest has very few deviations from the standard Knight quest. However, Silverknight games are substantially different from standard knights due to the mire and their starting equipment, especially during the early game.

Silverknights will always start as Lafwul.

Starting equipment
Silverknights start the game with only one of three weapons, each with equal probabilities of being chosen at the start of the game:

* a blessed +1 Silverknight scythe (wielded)
* a blessed +1 Silverknight spear (wielded)
* a blessed +1 Silverknight sword (wielded)

Silverknights are granted the 'rot kin' rot research upgrade at the start of the game.

Silverknights start with knowledge of all non-magical weapons and armor.

Silverknights have no pet at the start of the game, which is instead found in the quest.

Intrinsics
Silverknights gain the following intrinsic properties upon reaching the given experience levels:

* Level 7: Speed
* Level 14: Unlocks the sacred style and eldritch style combat skills up to expert, and allows the use of the runic style.

Attributes
Skills
Silverknights have the following skills available to them:

colspan="2" style="font-size:larger" | Silverknight skills
Max !! Skills
Basic

* Weapons: axe, bow, club, flail, hammer, knife, lance, pick-axe, scimitar, trident
* Combat: riding, two-weapon combat
Skilled

* Weapons: broad sword, crossbow, mace, morning star, saber, short sword, two-handed sword
* Spells: attack, clerical, healing
Expert

* Weapons: dagger, farm implements, long sword, polearms, spear
* Combat: bare-handed combat, beast mastery, great-weapon fighting, shield, shield bashing

Silverknights start with Basic skill with their starting weapon and riding.

Special rules
Silverknights gain 50% more total skill slots, like human (starting race)#dNetHack characters.

For a Silverknight, armor made of silver doesn't impede spellcasting.

Silverknights gain 1 morale when hitting a monster in melee for up to 10 morale.

Mire
Silverknights do not have a conventional early game. For them, the dungeon is submerged under a "mire" and lasts until the hero has attempted to gain access to their quest by chatting to their quest leader, independently of whether or not they are allowed access. While mired, all randomly generated monsters gain the swollen template. All items not made of erosion-proof material are generated with three levels of erosion. Fewer items randomly generate, and all items made of a non-organic material will become burried on the square they generated on. The dungeon' walls and corridors will be colored red if colors is enabled, indicating that it is mired.

Once the hero has attempted to become allowed into their quest, the mire will lift from the dungeon until they complete the quest. Any items in the main dungeon that are not on the hero's person or in the quest then have their erosion removed and become un-burried, including a full set of Silverknight gear on the upstairs of the the 1st dungeon level: silverknight helm, silverknight armor, silverknight gauntlets, silverknight boots and both of the two silverknight weapons that the hero didn't start the game with.

Rank titles
A silverknights' rank progression is exactly the same as a standard knight's:
* XL 1–2: Knight
* XL 3-5: Gallant
* XL 6-9: Esquire
* XL 10-13: Bachelor
* XL 14-17: Knight
* XL 18-21: Banneret
* XL 22-25: Chevalier/Chevaliere
* XL 26-29: Seignieur/Dame
* XL 30: Paladin

Gods
The Silverknight pantheon is the same as the knight pantheon:
* Lawful: Lugh
* Neutral: Brigit
* Chaotic: Manannan Mac Lir

Quest
Silverknight quest
Like the standard Knight's quest, the Silverknight's quest sees them fighting Ixoth for The Magic Mirror of Merlin, an artifact mirror. It grants magic resistance and telepathy while carried, and a Silverknight carrying it also deals doubled damage to their enemies with offensive magic (i.e. some wands and most spells). Applying or wielding the Mirror causes it to speak a random rumor that is true if the Mirror is blessed, false if it is cursed and either if it is uncursed.

History
Silverknights were introduced in the 3.26.0 version of dNetHack, released on May 16th of 2026.

Strategy
Silverknights will have a harder than normal early game. Because the all dungeon branches are locked until they reach their quest, finding food and better armor for lower might be a challenge. Their primary objective will be reaching the quest to unlock access the rest of the dungeon's branches, where they'll want to have some training with their weapon skill for their weapon's expert traits. Both the Silverknight's scythe and spear have some form of ranged attack that can be used to take out foes from a distance, vital against the larger swollen monsters with high damage attacks. The scythe's rings will fade quickly, but can be used in conjunction with the dash extended command to avoid direct confrontation. The spear will add an additional sacred phalanx attack at Skilled and Expert, and can be used at will by force-attacking an empty square in the direction of a non-adjacent monster. Since all swollen monsters beome slowed relative to their normal counterparts more monsters can be consistently kited. While Silverknights tend to have average Constitution, their low natural regeneration rate at the start of the game makes gaining experience levels, at least until they acquire their intrinsic speed ideal.

Origins
The Silverknights, their weaponry and the "mire" are inspired by the Cleanrot Knights from the 2022 videogame Elden Ring. Cleanrot Knights are the footsoldiers in the army of Malenia, demigod of rot, who clashed with Starscourge Radahn's army during The Shattering that have since languished and can be found rising from the mire of the scarlet rot infested Swamp of Aeonia. All Cleanrot Knights, due to their allegiance to Malenia, are afflicted by this scarlet rot, which is a type of all-consuming poison and the essence of the Outer God of Rot for which there is no cure. While their true appearance is hidden by their armor the Cleanrot knights have been severely degraded by the rot, walking with a distinct hunched gait and their more afflicted commanders even vomit scarlet rot. Their design features hyphae growing out of the links between armor pieces and white leathery "insect wings" sprout from their legs. These features bear some resemblance to the pale appearance of the kindred of rot, which are a species vaguely resembling a silverfish endemic to the same Swamp of Aeonia the Cleanrot knights are most heavily present in, relating the two — dNetHack's Silverknights embrace this connection, though they are still functionally separate races.

The Battle of Aeonia between Malenia and Radahn's forces resulted in the blooming of the first scarlet aeonia in the heart of Caelid, what would later become the Swamp of Aeonia. Within the Swamp of Aeonia, Cleanrot Knights can be found lying submerged in the stagnant scarlet rot until disturbed, the likely survivors of the aeonian battle. cleanrot knights. in the original japanese "noble-rot knights" - a term used in winemaking for fungal growth that sweetens the wine but has a putrid smell
the "clean" may be in reference to malenia's unwilling title of goddess of rot, as such they are "a more refined strain of rot" than that which the order of rot envisions. it may also be in reference to their outwardly normal appearance which belies their true state.
order of the strongest knights among all the armies of the demigods. defeated radahn's red-mane forces and continue the battle still in the war-dead catacombs
cleanrot knight finlay was one of the only knights to survive the encounter with starscourge radahn and singlehandedly carried Malenia across half of the lands between through enemy territory, alone
the cleanrot helmet bears resemblance to the funerary helmets and (passing) resemblance to gladiator's helmets
the ranking a cleanrot knight posesses is indicated by their weaponry: only commanders are granted the halo scythe which bears miquella's rings ash of war
cleanrot knights demonstrate a wider moveset with their weaponry than the player can: besides the forward-facing palisade, cleanrot knights wielding their spears can send phalanxes in straight lines as well as in a backstep move
cleanrot knights can parry by crossing the shield and spear, releasing an aoe if the player doesn't disengage
cleanrot knights are mobility focused, with their offhand sword sporting the fastest attacks. it is also the most rot infested, as their grab attack only inflicts rot when the player is pierced by the sword
their spear seems to be the most holy-heavy of the three armaments, and is imbued with holy element in many attack: golden shove, impale, sacred phalanx (line), sacred phalanx (backstep)
compare the scarlet rot with buddhism's path to enlightenment - the lotus flower, through pain one ascends the cycle of life and death. contrary to this, the rot is actually embracing this cycle, and all the pain, death and life it brings. scarlet rot arises where stagnation is present. the cycle of death and rebirth - death and decay bring life
malenia and milicent are vessels for the rot, it feeds off of their pain. while it is a destructive force, it seems that by rejecting the rot's advance and refusing to embrace it, it becomes stronger, blossoming ino the scarlet rot buds. and as such, it is a insidious force too, that feeds off of suffering above all
it is a red poison, corrupting both body and mind, slowly turning man into beast. while it can be resisted, it is an arduous fate. it is as blood, but bubbles and writhes with life. while it is clearly noxious, it is also a substrate for forms of life adapted to the rot
all things touched by the rot become raw and wild, and swell to gigantic size, bursting with it. the flora of the rot is almost entirely comprised of fungus, red caps like open sores on the land. the only exception to this are the flowers, somewhat (not really) akin to lotus flowers or spider lilies or cedar apple rust fungus. perhaps the true flower inspiration would be a parasite? fauna becomes ferocious and deformed, especially the head and torso, while the extremities become vestigial as they feast on all that moves, their scavenging nature seems to be a common throughline - detritovores are the category of life favored most by the scarlet rot. only the pests remain. also reminds one of bloodborne's vermin, and their impurity. wildlife: dogs, crows, fungus, (lotus) flowers, gnarled trees, kindred of rot
the old outer god of rot sealed away in the lake of rot. the scorpion's stinger, "relic" of this god. similar to the formless mother, scarlet rot is either its essence, something born of it, or even the god itself.
the old god of scarlet rot was sealed by the blind swordsman who later trained malenia in the waterfowl - like water foul, which is what scarlet rot is. likely with a scimitar of sorts, and was granted this swordsmanship by a fairy. it is antithetical to the rot, and halts it - stagnation, the rot, cannot prosper under flowing water.
kindly miquella attempted to find a cure for malenia's scarlet rot at all costs but couldn't, only being able to create unalloyed gold prostethics and the gold needle, that only halt its effects, to a degree.
gold is an unreactive substance that cannot be tainted. even after being almost fully consumed by the rot, the cleanrot knights remain upright, if not human, and their armor unblemished, rotted from the inside as they may be
the kindred of rot seem to follow all rot, but are shunned only by malenia
their spears are broad-headed, engraved and ceremonial seeming. the same spears that make up radahn's arrows, as he reuses the many he was impaled by. the small buckler is off-color, silvery instead of gold, and is enchanted to ward off the rot, though clearly not enough to combat it fully. their scythe is rune-shaped and their sword rusted in places
cleanrot knights sometimes carry st. trina's lilies - "dulls the senses, preventing agitation"
cleanrot knights are described as having vowed allegiance to malenia even if it means their death at the hands of a horrible, slow putrefaction of the body or by combat
things that combat rot: holy (?), water (?), "agitation"/movement (?), trina's lily (?), fire, unalloyed gold, buckler's enchantment, blind swordsman's sword technique. things that fester rot: stagnation (?), betrayal/shock (?), aeonian blossoms, death, poison. https://eldenring.wiki.gg/wiki/Hand_of_Malenia - consecration fights rot
their helmets are also in imitation of malenia's, adorned with white wings like a valkyries are sometimes shown to be, as are armor's general color scheme and design, and fighting style - speed. when hitting an enemy in quick succesion cleanrot knights become buffed through their winged sword insignia, a technique in imitation of malenia's swordsmanship
red and gold - scarlet rot and holiness, the golden order
cleanrot knights limp as though they are under some influence, either internal from the scarlet rot, or external, being controlled. notably, their slack-faced posture disappears when fighting. mesh name: "cordyceps"
under their armor, hyphae grow and sometimes peak out from under. on their legs, flacid leathery insect wings lie neatly hidden by their cape. while they don't seem to be kindred of rot, they undoubtedly aren't human anymore. as well as being at least severely afflicted by the rot, with their insides already corroded by it as they regurgite it (commanders at least). even so, they remain standing. their breathing is ragged and slow, but human.
the kindred of rot are shunned children, who are part silverfish, ant, termite, molusc, centipede and human. they boast their own culture, religion, cousine and magic - the pest threads. when killed, they curl up in death throes. they exult in rot and poison. their life cycle begins as an egg, grown from dead biomass such as a carcass, and then a larval stage where it doesn't posess legs but has eyes. and then begins growing many, many hands on both its abdomen and inside its eyes, bursting them. their variants include the rot larva, forager brood and scarlet pests. they are followed by the rot disciples, rotten dogs and moore. sage gowry seems to have some control over them, perhaps through magic or a rot incantation, or perhaps through some hivemind link. they follow romina, who saved them from messmer. they skitter across the ground and, when praying, prostrate themselves with their tails to the air, or raise their arms to the heavens. their glaives are made of hard shell, perhaps of their fallen, and resembles a nox blade, and even the beasthunter's saif
