玩家可以通过更改<code>[[选项#fruit|fruit]]</code>选项来变更游戏中自定义水果的物品名称。若在游戏进行时变更该选项，则当前游戏中已有的水果会保留原来的名称，新生成的水果则会使用变更后的名称。不同名称的自定义水果无法堆叠，除此之外，自定义水果的名称不会对游玩过程产生任何影响。如果玩家需要[[许愿]]获取自定义水果，则不论当前设定的名称如何，必须输入“fruit”才能得到需要的物品。

除食用相关的消息外，以下情况的消息也会使用自定义水果的名称：

* [[饮用]][[果汁]]
* 饮用[[看见隐形药水]]（出现的消息和饮用果汁相同）
* 饮用[[疾病药水]]（设定上疾病药水是变质或被污染的果汁）

如果玩家将自定义水果的名称设为“XX of YY”的格式，游戏会对其进行语法分析，令相关的消息看起来更合理（例如说，如果给水果起名“leg of ham”，则在英文版游戏中，饮用果汁时输出的消息会是“This tastes like ham juice”）。

NetHack会对水果的命名作出一定的限制：如果玩家以任意怪物的尸体或罐头，或是任何带有{{cnlink|BUC}}描述的名称为水果命名，游戏会自动为水果的名称加上前缀“糖制的”（candied），以使名称合法化{{refsrc|src/options.c|6412|nethack=3.6.7}}。

黏菌（slime mold或slime mould）是一类类似霉菌的生命体的统称。此类生命体在其生活史中有一段时期会变成如同黏液般的形式，因此得名“黏菌”。目前已发现的黏菌种类有1000多种。黏菌大多性喜温暖潮湿、植被丰富的环境，多出现在热带和森林群落中，但也会在其他适宜其生存的环境里栖息，例如泥土，甚至是空调和雨水槽。
