速度靴的基础{{cnlink|AC}}加成为1，穿戴时提供[[外在]]的[[加速]]特质。若在穿上或脱下速度靴时角色的速度发生了变化，则速度靴会被[[自动鉴定]]。

穿戴速度靴会使得角色的常态速度+6，且每回合有{{frac|3}}的概率使角色的速度在当回合内再+6。换句话说，角色的常态速度从12提升到18（提升到初始速度的150%，每2回合可行动3次），且每回合有{{frac|3}}的概率提升到24（初始速度的200%，一回合可行动2次）——此时角色的平均速度是20（初始速度的167%，每3回合可行动5次）。

The [[Black market (SLASH'EM)|black market]] shopkeeper, One-Eyed Sam, is always generated wearing an enchanted pair of speed boots; a guaranteed pair of speed boots also appears in [[The Spider Caves]].

Due to the new [[create pool]] spell that monsters will cast, non-flying characters may prefer [[water walking boots]] to speed boots as their primary boots of choice in the late game.

In [[NetHack brass]], speed boots provide a boost to speed that can stack with other sources of speed, rather than setting the character's speed to very fast.

In [[GruntHack]], speed boots are generally less desirable since other boots and all types of armor can have the speed property, providing more sources of extrinsic speed - for example, "blessed greased fixed +3 [[dragonhide]] water walking boots of speed" is a common wish target for the boots slot.

A monster that is given a wish may wish for a blessed, [[greased]] and fixed pair of speed boots enchanted from +1 to +4 if they are not already fast and can wear boots.
