Characters wishing to use the tonitrus for an extended amount of time may wish to make it [[silver]] or [[gold]] (bonus blunt and holy damage) to supplement its low damage output. Although it would be a viable early to mid game weapon, the tonitrus lacks the necessary damage output to keep up with monster [[hp]] growth and by the time most characters hit the [[Neutral Quest (dNetHack)|neutral quest]] will already be underperforming. Most Undead hunters who get them will likely also already have invested skill slots elsewhere. Its bonus damage is an advantage against the monsters present in the quest mostly just in theory, as it is largely superseded by [[The Silver Flame|silver flame object properties]], which also have a much greater impact in the fights against the big threats in the quest ([[Index wolf]], [[Moon's Chosen]]). Its most useful trait for most use cases will likely be its ability to deal with [[mist wolves]] relatively quickly.
