The '''lunatic''' is one of the player [[role]]s in NetHack. Lunatics can be [[human (starting race)|humans]], [[orc (starting race)|orcs]] or [[gnome (starting race)|gnomes]] and can be Neutral or Chaotic.

[[Guidebook]] entry: You don't have to be crazy to quest for the Amulet... but it helps!

Lunatics are [[hallucinating]] at all times. This hallucination does not time out and cannot be [[Hallucination#Cures|cured]] by any of the normal means. For a lunatic, quaffing a [[potion of hallucination]] or eating a corpse that would ordinarily cause hallucination instead temporarily cures the hallucination for the same number of turns. Other circumstances that ordinarily cause hallucination ([[black light]]s, etc) instead have the effect of reading a blessed [[scroll of identification]].
