The [[hero]] is one of the more "obvious" beneficiaries of the fact that NetHack is not real life: otherwise, a [[Human (starting race)|human adventurer]] being caught in a [[bear trap]] would almost invariably die from their injury, especially since [[nurse]]s will not be generated until much later in the game; hydration would be a necessity and also cumbersome to deal with, especially since water does not accompany most (if not all) sources of food, and water from [[fountain]]s and [[sink]]s is not properly treated (on top of being hazardous for many other reasons); and any adventurer that trips a [[rolling boulder trap]] would be crushed and killed instantly from the impact of the [[boulder]] rolling over them, to speak nothing of any boulders [[thrown]] by [[Giant (monster attribute)|giants]].

==The setting==
The setting of ''NetHack'', such as it is, can be loosely termed as "kitchen sink fantasy": a player can find [[dragon]]s, [[Troll (monster class)|trolls]], [[Vampire (monster class)|vampires]], and [[Demon (monster class)|demons]] coexisting alongside [[Tolkien]]ian [[Elf (monster attribute)|elves]], [[Elf (monster attribute)|elves]], [[hobbit]]s and [[Orc (monster attribute)|orcs]]... as well as [[archeologist]]s, [[Healer|doctors]], [[samurai]], [[Valkyrie|viking-like warriors]], and [[tourist]]s in possibly-tacky [[Hawaiian shirt]]s. Many items and objects also work on [[pun]]-based logic or are derived from specific fantasy works, e.g. a [[magic marker]] can write [[Magical item|magical]] [[scroll]]s and [[spellbook]]s with its ink, while an [[expensive camera]] can be broken to release a [[Discworld]]-style "picture painting demon".

This does not at all preclude ''NetHack'' from including mundane weapons, creatures or objects, but such inclusions are not remotely guaranteed, and fantasic creatures and items are similarly not obligated as additions by virtue of the setting's seeming "inconsistency". ''NetHack'' and its variants do try to curate and maintain a distinct sort of "flavor" to the game world, even if it is not always a major priority.
