Valkyries can be of [[lawful]] or [[neutral]] alignment, and can be played as [[Human (starting race)|humans]], [[Dwarf (starting race)|dwarves]] or [[Yuki-onna (starting alignment)|yuki-onna]]. Like in ''NetHack'' and unlike most other roles, they always start the game as female.

==Starting inventory==
Each Valkyrie starts with the following equipment:

* a +1 [[spear]] ([[wielded]])
* a +1 [[bow]] (alternate weapon)
* a stack of 15-24 +0 [[arrow]]s ([[quiver]]ed)
* a +3 [[buckler]]
* a +0 [[pair of gloves]]
* +0 [[leather armor]]
* a +0 pair [[high boots]]
* 1-2 uncursed [[food ration]]s

Yuki-onna Valkyries will be given a [[mithril]] spear rather than an [[iron]] one, due to being [[Fey (dNetHack)|fey]].

Valkyries start with knowledge of all non-[[Magical item|magical]] weapons, along with any applicable racial equipment.

The Valkyrie's default starting [[pet]] is a [[little dog]] or [[kitten]] with equal probability.

Valkyries gain the following intrinsic [[properties]] upon reaching the given [[experience level]]s:
