“yumi”即日语“弓”的发音，用于描述使用不对称设计的传统日本弓，包括较长的“大弓”和更短的“半弓”，主要用于弓道的训练。

在封建时代的日本，和弓对于武士而言是重要的武器。和弓使用的箭被称作“矢”（ya）。早期的和弓大约出现于公元前3世纪，通常用小树苗或树枝制成，有中央握把，大多数较短，被称作“丸木弓”。关于不对称设计的和弓的文献记录最早见于公元3世纪的《[[wikipedia:zh:魏书|魏书]]》，而最早的实物则在奈良县发现，推测来自公元5世纪。在平安时代（794{{一字线}}1185），和弓的长度和制作工艺发生了改变，之后在10世纪末演变成以竹包裹木芯的合成弓。之后数百年，和弓的制作工艺不断演变，并在16世纪演变成现在的设计。
