#annotate is a extended command in NetHack that lets players specify one line of text to associate with the current dungeon level.

Description

A level annotated with this command will print a message each time the player character enters the level - annotations made using this command are visible via the #overview extended command. Annotating a single space will remove the annotation from the current level.

Amnesia can erase annotations from the character's memory.

The following information pertains to an upcoming version (3.7.0). If this version is now released, please verify that the information below is still accurate, then update the page to incorporate it.

The m#overview command allows editing of annotations on any level.

Strategy

Annotation is used to leave helpful messages for later parts of the game, such as messages indicating the presence of co-aligned unicorns, warnings to watch out for nasty monsters (e.g. mind flayer, arch-lich, etc.), floors with vaults, or the location of the entrance to the Wizard's Tower.

History

Annotations first appear in NetHack 3.6.0.
