Branch

Branches are paths you can take in the Mazes of Menace that will lead you to items and XP. They are not to be confused with special levels, though most branches contain them (the Big Room is a special level, but it is not a branch in the dungeon).

Below is a list of dungeon branches:

• Dungeons of Doom, which contains the following dead-end branches:
  • Gnomish mines (eight or nine levels deep)
  • Sokoban (four levels high)
  • The Quest (mandatory; contains the quest artifact and the silver bell. Five to seven levels deep)
  • Fort Ludios (always accessible through a magic portal in a vault. One level)
• Gehennom, which contains the following dead-end branch:
  • Vlad's Tower (mandatory; contains the Candelabrum of Invocation. Three levels high)
• The Endgame, consisting of the four Elemental Planes and the Astral Plane.

When you reach the end of a dead-end branch, you walk or levelport back to the main branches.

Not branches are the Rogue level and the Wizard's Tower, though the latter behaves similar to a dungeon branch when it comes to level teleportation.

UnNetHack
