Forum:Glitch? Mjollnir randomly appearing

So my internet was down, and I felt like Nethack, so I dug up an old 3.4.3 distro I had lying around and played a game or two (I get killed early if I don't have the NAO colored health-bar, unfortunately.) Something weird happened in one game: I a female Ranger on Dlvl. 2, and I went into a shop. I couldn't afford anything, so I walked out, and lo and behold, right outside the shop was the uncursed Mjollnir. I don't know if it had been lying somewhere and my pet had picked it up and dropped it, or if it just randomly appeared, but anyways, it was there. I actually got pretty far wielding it, but it felt wrong being a ranger and using it.

Now, at first I thought it was a bones level. My pet could have plausibly found the items pile and picked it up, but that doesn't track, for a number of reasons. First, where did the ghost go? Normally the ghost is on top of the pile, right? And second, considering that pets don't normally step on cursed items, what are the chances of a bones pile being all b/u items? And finally, I didn't find the ghost or the pile anywhere, and if I couldn't find it, how could my pet?

So is this just a glitch, or is there some game-play mechanic I don't know about?

You're probably confusing it with Excalibur, which cannot be randomly generated. Mjollnir can. Probably got generated in the shop and the pet carried it out. Why would using it feel "wrong"? Because it's "too powerful"? Becoming powerful is the key to success in NetHack, i.e. outside of conduct games I'd always use whatever item's the best for any given slot :D --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 08:00, 18 September 2017 (UTC)
I just meant it felt wrong using an item I assumed to be a glitch, and also because I thought it was normally a gift-only item for Valkyries. I just meant it felt odd having it as a ranger. But still, the odds of getting it on l2 must be astronomically slim, right? It wasn't in the shop, because I'm fairly sure I had to open the door, so my pet had never been inside. Well, thanks for the explanation, anyways. JMarieStanton (talk) 15:57, 18 September 2017 (UTC)
It could be the pet picked it up in a generic/plain room and you did not see them do so and repeatedly picked up and dropped it until it was at your feet. Were than any rooms close to the shop entrance? --User (talk) 23:57, 18 September 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, that's the only thing it could be. JMarieStanton (talk) 02:27, 19 September 2017 (UTC)
