  • level four bar-fem-orc-cha, go downstairs from level three of the mazes to find it's level one of the mines. i move away from the down stairs, and sense a faint wave of psychic energy. wtf? next turn my brains are dinner. not a bones file (playing locally) so what could have generated a level thirteen creature so early? the potion and wand of polymorph both state no out-of-depth monsters, and there're no poly traps above level eight. i've had loads of YAAD fun with chameleons recently (unexpected master lich then a red dragon at level 10) but that's a ways further on. it left a bones file so i guess i can investigate further if i'm lucky later, but in the meantime does anyone have any ideas? --195.50.80.61 12:36, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

In the mines, some random h are created. Random-in-a-class monster creation follows different rules than ordinary random monsters. Too difficult monsters are always possible, just very unlikely. (source:makemon.c#mkclass). Fortunately for you, this specific problem is very rare. Tjr 15:27, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

argh! that's scary. and this is true wherever a level description says "N random X"? hmm, more careful reading needed. bones file killed me again immediately, btw. happy days. --195.50.80.61 12:19, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
It turns out mind flayers aren't always possible. See this thread for the chance of purple liches at the castle, which is the same piece of code. --Tjr 15:45, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
