I recently started playing Slash'em extended and have run into a small problem. Some items in my inventory are marked with a # instead of a letter. This makes those items very hard to use. I thought perhaps I had run out of letters to use for items but even after dropping most of my inventory the problem persisted. Apologies if this isn't the right place for this, I looked around online and couldn't find any information on this.

Did you check the hints page? It's explained there, as well as a bunch of other things. In fact, that page is recommended reading for all beginners. Anyway, as you guessed, it's because you ran out of letters. Vanilla would prevent you from having more than 52 items in open inventory, but that was just stupid IMHO, especially if you were trying to get your entire inventory identified or uncursed with blessed versions of certain scrolls. And transferring the contents of a container to another was also extremely awkward because if it was a lot of items, you wouldn't be able to do it in one go. With my system, all of that is possible. There are a bunch of tricks that can be used, too. Hitting , in the menus selects all items on the current page, . selects all items in the current menu, and the glyph of an item type selects (or deselects) all items of that type, e.g. % to select all food. And of course the #adjust command will let you set the # items to something else. It is kind of awkward at times, I admit. But I've already attempted several times to improve it and make the items more easy to select; all those attempts didn't work out, sadly. And I'm not going back to a 52 item limit again, so please don't suggest that. In the case of doubt, the easiest solution is to carry a container with you (most characters are strong enough to use a large box without being burdened) and put excess items into it.
