Forum:Statue option?

In 3.6.1 (NAO variation), is there an option to make the statues look like they did in previous versions? Whenever I see an enemy symbol, I go into threat mode, and it makes me mad when I see that it's a statue. My terminal doesn't have great colors, and I'd rather have the statues back as "'" than have to screw around with the color setting. Is there a way to do this? I was never too clear on some of the configuration settings. Thanks, Ms. J. Marie Stanton, Professional Valkyrie (talk) 15:24, 13 September 2018 (UTC)

EDIT: So symset is not changeable on NAO? - Marie
Symset (ascii/IBM/DEC) is changeable. Most symbols are also configurable via SYMBOLS=S_whatever:X. Strangely, S_statue doesn't seem to work. Perhaps suggest to the DevTeam that they should add an option to display "classic" statues? You're not the first to want to do this. --Phol ende wodan (talk) 18:26, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
Your idea is tempting. To some extent I do bear a grudge against the new DevTeam, but I could put that aside I guess. Ms. J. Marie Stanton, Professional Valkyrie (talk) 00:56, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
UPDATE: I emailed politely and got a response somewhere in tone between dismissive and downright rude. The developer said that they've had years of development versions to get used to the new statues, and consequently they just don't care. Ms. J. For what it is worth, I agree with you 100%; I go into "threat mode" myself. Maybe we are supposed to have difficulty discerning between a statue and the real thing? I just really dislike it when the statue is of a monster that is a white letter/symbol! --User (talk) 09:02, 29 September 2018 (UTC)

Marie wouldn't believe her eyes. No! That was much to early. She wasn't prepared yet. A Yeti! "No wonder nobody's found any in the Himalaya when they're all hanging around in this musty dungeon," she thought grimly. But fabled snowman or not, she was chosen from birth to search the Amulet, and by Tyr, she was going to get it. She checked her arsenal. Wand of cold. "Hrmpf, fat load of use that will be." +0 iron skull cap, cursed dagger, a handful of darts, wow, impressive. At least she had found an uncursed scroll of teleportation. "And I could always engrave Elbereth's name, I guess," but she didn't like that thought at all. To Tyr was her only allegience, but somehow those uncultivated monsters had never heard of him. Well, she was going to fix that. Luckily there was a boulder in the middle of the room, so she could approach unseen. Yet, somehow, she still knew exactly where the Yeti was. Odd. She clutched her +0 small shield firmly and tried to sneak toward her opponent. No mistakes now. Slowly, cautiously, ever closer she edged in the semi-darkness. - Crunch! Her heart skipped a beat. She had stepped on a bug on the floor! It had been tiny, but in the utter silence of the fourth level underground the echo from the stone walls felt like it would be heared even in Gehennom. She felt a chill running down her spine and her hands became sweaty. Don't move. Don't move! ... Lucky again, the Yeti hadn't noticed her. "Yeti or not, here I come!" She was now only two steps away. Now one. She hit with all the strength she could muster. CLANK! Her trusty old mace struck white marble. What!? An uncursed statue of a monkey!? ... Relieved Marie looked around and hoped that nobody had caught this scene on their expensive camera. "In the demigod bar I'd never hear the end of it. Literally never, that's the downside of becoming immortal," she thought with a smirk and turned toward the door. - Click! Next thing she knew something rammed painfully into her back. ... --Luna (talk) 00:41, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
PS: A candy bar if you know which role she is (there are 3 clear hints) and where the Click! came from. (Don't worry, she's Xp:4, she's fine.)
Priestess :) The clear hints are the small shield, the mace and Tyr (if she were a valkyrie she'd either have a long sword or spear depending on which variant she's playing). And I guess the click is a dart/arrow trap and the thing that hit her in the back was a dart or arrow fired by the trap. Anyway, I wish the variant that calls itself 3.6.x would finally go ahead and make statues look like statues again, i.e. the way they used to look in vanilla. Until then, I can't consider 3.6.x to be vanilla, it is a variant in my eyes :P --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 07:25, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
And that she pointed out the statue was uncursed. - Andrio Celos (talk) 07:32, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
Correct %%. (1) Reveres Tyr, yet shield is +0, no Valk would ditch her +3 shield for a +0 one. And a Valk wouldn't have stepped on a bug, they start with stealth. (2) Mace is 'trusty old', implying she started with it, not picked it up recently on her way down to Dlvl:4. (3) Instantly recognizes BUC. Each of the 3 is unambiguously Priestess. :) About the Click!: no, wrong, dart traps only click when empty. For this one there is a very clear set-up in the story, too. Routine NetHackers should read the sentence and immediately think "Watch out!" Oh, and I forgot: what does "still knew exactly where the Yeti was" mean? Because that's also a hint.
Back to topic, I love the statue change. Like I tried to convey with my story: you're creeping through the semi-darkness, hyper-alert, peril might lurk around every corner, every tiny noise makes you jump, the dim light plays tricks on your eyes, you begin to imagine things in the shadows... The statue change adds so much to the atmosphere. Like all of you, I instantly go to 'threat mode', followed by relief. That's how badass NetHack is, a stupid purple letter h can make you freak out, no other game does that. However, I do wish they'd move some of the white monsters to other colors like light gray, so the 'statue shock' doesn't wear off and become annoying. The statue shock should happen rarely, but hit hard when it does. E.g. quivering blobs and other common monsters should be recolored, but Yetis should remain white. --Luna (talk) 11:15, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
I guess in the excitement, she forgot to push the boulder away before exploring the rest of the room, or else didn't know about that trick... - Andrio Celos (talk) 11:41, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
% :) --Luna (talk) 11:53, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
She still knew where the "yeti" was because it was a statue, even though it didn't look like a statue :D --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 12:20, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
Another % :) So unhealthy, I think next time I'm going to give out %s. --Luna (talk) 15:59, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
Yay! Actually I've taken to collecting kelp fronds in our system's games too. Could trade you. - Andrio Celos (talk) 01:29, 31 October 2018 (UTC)
