Forum:Tiles mode on NAO?

Like the title says, can you use tiles mode on NAO? It's probably the only thing keeping me from playing there, I can't handle just symbols, I can handle low quality graphics, but not symbols only.

Not through a standard telnet connection, no. It would be possible if someone made a special interface client, but I don't know of any. --The Cheshire Cat 16:45, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Copied from Talk:Nethack.alt.org:

Not on NAO, but there used to be a server with tiles here, but it's gone. It gives the source, though, so it's possible to set up your own tile server. Dr. 8-Bit 19:04, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
After a bit of poking around I found another tilehack server: here. Dr. 8-Bit 19:07, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
It should be possible to play with tiles, assuming you've got the vt_tiledata-option turned on. See this NAO forum post for technical details. Unfortunately, there just aren't any clients that support this, yet. --paxed 19:16, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

What about Ebonhack? Does it work? --Tjr 14:13, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

I think it could be made to work with some code changes, but it seems to throw a lot of errors. Also, I really don't like the wide font it uses for text, but I guess that's unavoidable... --paxed 16:05, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
You can get a more normal shaped font (or, more precisely, a more normally spaced font) if you use tiles that are taller than they are wide, instead of square. This will also make your experience more visually similar to the Qt version's default. For example, if you open up the 32x32 tiles in Gimp (it's a single .png file, 1280x960) and resize it to, say, 960x960 (yes, unlink the vertical and horizontal numbers so you can change the aspect ratio), that'll make your tiles 20x32, resulting in a much more normal-shaped font for text. I think the smallest you'd want to go would be 480x480 (making the tiles 12x16). I've confirmed that these sizes work with Ebonhack. To change tilesets, pull down the menu on the far left (to the left of Game -- I think it's called Ebonhack) and choose "Graphics options", and you'll get a dialog that will let you select which tileset to use.
