The Gauntlets of Defense are an artifact pair of gloves that appear in SLASH'EM and SlashTHEM. They are neutral, and their base item is a pair of gauntlets of dexterity. They are the first sacrifice gift for Monks.
Description
In addition to the regular effects of gauntlets of dexterity, the Gauntlets of Defense provide half physical damage while worn and can be invoked to toggle invisibility if you do not already have the property.
Strategy
In SLASH'EM, the Gauntlets of Defense are an excellent sacrifice gift and commonly-desired item for ascension kits, and may even be valuable to cross-aligned players since they are not an intelligent artifact. The Gauntlets are a tantalizing early first wish for any neutral character - although they do not grant magic resistance or reflection like dragon scale mails, the half physical damage, invisibility and dexterity bonuses to AC can be a life-saver for an early character, especially casters like Wizards who typically lack armor and hit points.
However, their utility and value as a wish decrease quite a bit over time - the Gauntlets are little better in the late game than standard gauntlets of dexterity, as the invisibility is easily superseded, and the always-available Hand of Vecna provides half physical damage as well as hungerless regeneration.
