A mace is a type of blunt weapon found in the dungeon.

The mace is the only weapon to use the mace skill. The Sceptre of Might is the only artifact mace.

Generation

Maces make up about 4% of randomly generated weapons (on the floor, as death drops, or in shops).

As in Dungeons & Dragons, where clerics are largely restricted to blunt weapons, maces are favored weapons for clerical types. The Priest(ess) role starts with a blessed +1 mace.[1] Aligned priests and high priests are generated with maces,[2] and player monster priests have a 50% chance of getting a mace as their weapon.[3]

Sergeants in the Yendorian army also have a 50% chance of getting a mace.[4]

The fake bones pile generated on the Rogue level has a 50% chance of containing a mace (possibly cursed).[5] This is a tribute to Rogue, in which the starting weapon is a mace.

Variants

Silver maces can be found in SLASH'EM and SporkHack. In the latter, Demonbane is a silver mace.

In SLASH'EM, there is a new artifact mace, Disrupter.

Encyclopedia entry

Originally a club armed with iron, and used in war; now a staff
of office pertaining to certain dignitaries, as the Speaker of
the House of Commons, Lord Mayors, Mayors etc. Both sword and
mace are symbols of dignity, suited to the times when men went
about in armour, and sovereigns needed champions to vindicate
their rights.
