A meat ring is a comestible generated by casting stone to flesh at a ring that is made of mineral or gemstone material. It can be worn like a normal ring, but will not do anything.

Strategy

Meat rings are normally accidentally created and are mostly useless, as they provide low nutrition and no effects as per other rings. They count as comestibles, not rings and so cannot be polymorphed into other rings (instead they turn into other comestibles).

In some situations, however, deliberately creating a meat ring may actually come in handy. If a mineral or gemstone ring is cursed, you won't be able to remove it (obviously). However, you can drop all other mineral and gemstone items (except the ring) and then cast stone to flesh at yourself. This will turn the ring into a cursed meat ring that remains on your finger, which can then be eaten off your own finger, even if wielding a cursed, two-handed weapon. Note that as a cursed comestible, you may vomit, be blinded or confused due to the curse, so be prepared to recover from these ill effects.

Alternatively, meat rings count as treats for carnivorous domestic pets, and mineral or gemstone "junk" rings (such as rings of hunger) can be turned into meat rings and thrown, primarily to raise the pet's apport. This is a poor use for junk rings, however, as all rings except meat rings can be polymorphed into different rings, presumably in an attempt to get to better ones from the polyfodder. For accidentally created, non-cursed meat rings, this is usually the best use for such an item.

Encyclopaedia entry

The meat ring shares its entry with the huge chunk of meat:

Some hae meat and canna eat,
And some would eat that want it;
But we hae meat, and we can eat,
Sae let the Lord be thankit.
