A rabid dog, d, is a monster that appears in EvilHack and Hack'EM. It is a small carnivorous canine that can be seen via infravision.

A rabid has a poisonous bite that is constitution-draining, similar to a rabid rat, and possesses poison resistance. In Hack'EM, rabid dogs cannot be tamed.

Eating a rabid dog corpse or tin does not convey aggravate monster as with domestic canine corpses, but the corpse is poisonous to eat.

Generation

Randomly generated rabid dogs are always created hostile.

Rabid dogs appear among the random d that are part of the first quest monster class for Samurai and make up 24175 of the monsters randomly generated on the Samurai quest.

Strategy

Rabid dogs are one of many early monsters in both variants that provide a nasty surprise for the uninitiated: while technically weaker than a regular dog, it moves just as fast at 16 speed, and their poisonous bite has the same damage as that of the large dog.

Origin

Rabies is a viral disease that causes encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) in humans and other mammals, and was historically referred to as hydrophobia or "fear of water", due to the symptom of panic when presented with liquids to drink. Other symptoms include fever and abnormal sensations at the site of exposure early on; these are followed by nausea, vomiting, violent movements, uncontrolled excitement, an inability to move parts of the body, confusion, and loss of consciousness. Once symptoms appear, the result is virtually always death, regardless of treatment.

Symptoms usually appear 1-3 months after contracting the disease, with variance from less than one week to more than one year depending on the distance the virus must travel to reach the central nervous system. Rabies is caused by lyssaviruses, including the rabies virus and Australian bat lyssavirus, and is spread by infected animals to other animals or humans via bite, scratch, or saliva that comes into contact with the eyes, mouth, or nose. Infected dogs are the most common source of rabies cases globally, with the Americas being a relative exception where bat bites are the most common source.
