uncursed creates a 5-unit radius of light
blessed creates a 9-unit radius of light
cursed creates a 5-unit radius of darkness
uncursed, confused
  • 20% chance of generating a yellow light [1]
  • otherwise, creates a 5-unit radius of darkness
blessed, confused
  • 20% chance of generating a yellow light [2]
  • otherwise, creates a 9-unit radius of darkness
cursed, confused
  • 20% chance of generating a black light [3]
  • otherwise, creates a 5-unit radius of darkness

The following information pertains to an upcoming version (NetHack 3.7). If this version is now released, please verify that it is still accurate, then update the page to incorporate this information.

Reading the scroll while confused now instead summons tame cancelled lights, which will follow you but cannot explode. An uncursed scroll will summon 3-4 y yellow lights, a blessed scroll will summon 5-6 yellow lights, and a cursed scroll will summon 3-4 y black lights (which are invisible, but still provide light). Nothing will be summoned if the appropriate type of light is genocided.

Area lit by blessed scroll

Messages

A lit field surrounds you!
You read a blessed or uncursed scroll.
You are surrounded by darkness!
You read a cursed scroll, or a scroll of any beatitude while confused.

If you are using a light source while creating darkness, one of the following messages may be appended:

Your <light source> goes out!
Your <candle>'s flame is extinguished.
Your light source is extinguished.
Suddenly, the only light left comes from Sunsword!
You are wielding Sunsword.

The following information pertains to an upcoming version (NetHack 3.7). If this version is now released, please verify that it is still accurate, then update the page to incorporate this information.

Lights appear all around you!
You read the scroll while confused and summoned lights. This auto-identifies the scroll if you can see any of the lights.
Tiny lights sparkle in the air momentarily.
You read the scroll while confused, but lights could not be summoned because they are genocided.

History

Creating a yellow or black light when confused was added in NetHack 3.6.0. Older versions of NetHack and variants will not have this behavior, and will always darken the room.

Strategy

While useful for lighting up a single room, a more efficient option is using a wand of light, spellbook of light, or a lamp, brass lantern or other light source. Therefore, this scroll is a good candidate for blanking.

UnNetHack

In UnNetHack, reading a scroll of light while confused has a different effect than reading a cursed scroll. If blessed or uncursed, it will summon 5-10 yellow lights scattered throughout the level. If the scroll is cursed, it will instead summon up to 15 black lights.
