I combined all the information from all the attributes into this page. I hope the page isn't too big. --MadDawg2552 01:09, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

what about rings ?

what about rings, specially of gain strength ? should be mentioned here... how does it work if you are 18/** ? if you are 25 ?

maybe it would be useful to have separate detailed article for each attributes.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Valjc (talkcontribs)

heh, I was wondering the same sort of thing about rings of constitution. My priest with 18 con can raise it to 20 with a ring he found, but does that do anything useful? Should I only put it on right before I'm about to eat a wraith corpse or drink a potion of gain level? MysterX 18:13, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
If your natural strength is 18/**, a +1 ring of gain strength will raise it to 19, and so proceed to 25. Other attributes go straight from 18 to 19. No attribute can ever exceed 25.--Ray Chason 04:37, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Dexterity: What about magic fountains?

"There is no direct way to increase your intrinsic dexterity apart from drinking a blessed potion of gain ability"

Quaffing magic fountains with 4 or more Luck provides a direct way to increase all attributes, including dexterity. The text of the Dexterity section suggests there is no other strategy to pursue to directly increase this attribute. This should be removed or changed to include fountains. Intelligence and Wisdom: Anti-Wizard Bias

Do I detect some anti-wizard bias in this article? Let's see a fuller and more inclusive discussion of Intelligence and Wisdom, and their effects on power levels.

I don't see bias, but the article is stubby. Feel free to improve it. -Tjr 11:29, January 29, 2010 (UTC)
I just do not see which activities lower Wisdom here, and don't know where else to look. — Preceding unsigned comment added by {} (talk • contribs)

Loose 1 wisdom:

 • kicking, sitting on, engraving on altars
 • one of the possible adverse prayer effects
 • cursed gain ability (1/6 chance)

Abuse wisdom:

 • improvise on most musical instruments

Just off the top of my head. Do some testing before you edit the article. -Tjr 01:37, March 15, 2010 (UTC)

charisma

i have 19 charisma and i don't know why. I have no items that increase attributs and I amplaying a human. Anyone have a explaination? This is slashem mind you. Ndwolfwood 23:14, 25 December 2010 (UTC)

You're either playing a hobbit or a vampire: see this page, they both have maximum charisma of 20, and some roles which start with high charisma, in particular tourists, would likely be near that maximum, although it's theoretically possible for any role. -Ion frigate 23:27, 25 December 2010 (UTC)
And it's quite easy to pick a hobbit when you meant to play a human, since it's bound to 'h', which in vanilla picks humans (humans are bound to 'H' in SLASH'EM); you can check your race with ctrl+x. -Ion frigate 23:28, 25 December 2010 (UTC)

this is a screenshot I'll make one of my inventory as well http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/9422/reganse.pngNdwolfwood 00:08, 26 December 2010 (UTC) http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/9422/reganse.png

no rings of admorment and I am human I can't figure out why I'd have a 19 charisma.Ndwolfwood 00:14, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

Try taking off the fedora. --Tjr

Oh there we go. I didn't know Fedora's increased charisma. Thanks and merry christmas.Ndwolfwood 00:22, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

SLASH'EM only, and I think only for Arcs. --Tjr

Italics in nethack brass section

Is there any meaning to the Nethack brass entries that read "12!" instead of "12"? Derekt75 01:03, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

The entries with the exclamation marks are the spellcasting stats for each role (wisdom for Healers, Priests, Monks, Valkyries, Knights; intelligence for the other roles). --Erica 03:43, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Removing "Strength affects bear trap escape"

"Strength of at least 18 speeds escape from a bear trap.[citation needed]"

Can't find a citation, only source that contradicts the statement.

Strength bug in 3.6?

I'm playing a chaotic monk, unburdened, not hungry, and pushing boulders around in Sokoban. I get the message "You feel weak! You haven't been exercising properly." My strength was at 18/01 and decreased to 18/00. I got the "You feel weak!" message and strength decrease earlier in this game as well, without any obvious abuse of of that stat. Is this a bug or just a fluke? (I'm playing version 3.6 on NAO.) Funcrunch (talk) 17:27, 4 March 2016 (UTC)

Probably not. At 18/01, pushing boulders around won't exercise strength, since exercise isn't possible once you hit 18 in that attribute. So all it takes is a single act of abuse and some bad luck to lose a point. And there's a lot of things that can abuse strength, including: acid attacks, explosions, air elemental's engulf attack, Xan's leg prick, falling rock traps (even if wearing a hard helmet), magic missile attacks. Any one of those could potentially do it. -- Qazmlpok (talk) 18:25, 4 March 2016 (UTC)

Separate pages

If we're going to have comprehensive lists of what exercises and abuses each attribute (and I'm not sure that we should), I think it might be time to give each attribute its own page. The current attributes pages is a little unwieldly at this point, the references alone won't fit on a single screen on my monitor. --Darth l33t (talk) 14:37, 26 June 2021 (UTC)

Agreed. -Actual-nh (talk) 15:30, 26 June 2021 (UTC)
Agreed. I feel like we should have comprehensive lists of what exercises and abuses attributes. I agree that the current page is unwieldy. Derekt75 (talk) 00:17, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
