Can we get a link to a downloadable that doesn't have to be built or compiled or what have you? I mean, I know that NetHack has a long history of being omni-platform and mostly targetted to the extreme computer-savvy, so raw source is probably adequate for most folks... but there are some dummies like me who need someone to make a .exe for us. I'd love to play, as a longtime Rogue/NetHacker, but I'm just not competent enough for this. Delbow 16:01, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

We don't have one yet; part of the problem is that I don't have a Windows compiler handy, and there seem to be some build system problems right now. We're working on it, though. Ais523 16:06, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
Have you heard of wineGCC? Elronnd (talk) 17:39, 18 March 2015 (UTC)Elronnd
I've actually come up with a much better method of producing downloadables for Windows (I taught aimake how to generate .msi files). I'm hoping to get 4.3-beta2 released soon; you'll be able to see the results then. Ais523 (talk) 14:01, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

I added a new section for differences. It is up for debate, of course, whether it belongs here or anywhere... Delbow (talk) 00:49, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

It may be nice to add explanation why it is called NetHack 4 (looks like official version) but is not mentioned on http://www.nethack.org/ 89.74.67.162 10:55, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

Simple... http://www.nethack.org/ is obviously maintained by pirates. :) Delbow (talk) 19:42, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
I prefer the name NiceHack. It gives an idea about the projects goals such as the revamped user interface and convenience features like confirmation before hitting a floating eye. It also gives some information about its history. "Nitro" plus "Ace" equals "Nice". --99.239.147.0 00:44, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
I'm intensely uncomfortable with naming a fork to mislead people into thinking that it's an updated version of the parent project. I would suggest the name "NetHack Faux". Or maybe "FauxHack" for short. That's phonetically similar to the author's originally desired naming, but makes it more obvious that this is a fork, not an actual release of the real NetHack.--122.107.161.208 23:47, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
How about NetHack Stone Soup? More seriously, though, I don't really think it's a problem. For one, it's NetHack 4, not NetHack 4.0.0; yes, that seems like a small difference, but it's significant, as it's not using the devs' original numbering system. Secondly, the project may, like Stone Soup, actually supplant the original (no one plays Crawl 4.x really any more, except for historical interest). There's no reason that projects seeking to do that should have to name themselves something saying that they're not the "real" or "true" game. NetHack is open source. Just because 3.4.3 has been around for almost a decade doesn't make it the Bible. -Ion frigate (talk) 01:04, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

It says here it was created by combining AceHack and NitroHack. Did it actually use all of the features from both, e.g., making floating eyes easier? 75.58.126.62 10:13, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

Not quite all, but most. (The floating eye changes are in there.) Ais523 (talk) 14:01, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

Font size

In the 4.3-beta2 SDL version, playing with the unicode "tileset", is it possible to make text larger? Enlarging the window just makes Nethack4 change the layout to more rows and columns of the same size text. (I'm on Windows, but perhaps the question applies to other platforms as well.) 173.61.135.70 06:07, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

Not currently because huge bugs happened with the font resizing. I hope it'll be possible in a future version, though. Ais523 (talk) 06:09, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
