Enchanting beyond +7

Dude, you're doing it wrong. The right way to go about overenchantment is to use stackable weapons. The most common target for overenchantment is daggers, since they're great throwing weapons to begin with, they're suitable for many roles, and they're stackable. Of course, most (all?) stackable weapons are projectile weapons, which benefit more from overenchantment than melee weapons since (with enough skill) you can throw more than one weapon per attack.

The advantage of stackable weapons is that a single scroll of enchant weapon can enchant a whole stack at once. This greatly reduces the number of scrolls that you need. You can collect a stack of (say) 200 daggers and enchant them all up to +7 with the same number of scrolls as it takes to produce a single +7 non-stackable weapon. Then you split the stack up into four stacks of 50 +7 daggers each, and attempt to overenchant each stack. Odds are one of them will survive and become +8. (If you do the math, your chances of succeeding are a little over 80%.) Now you have a stack of 50 +8 daggers. Divide it again into four stacks of 12-13 daggers each, and read another four scrolls on the four stacks to get (with high probability) a stack of +9 daggers. If you want you can even continue enchanting the +9 daggers one by one until you get one to +10, but most of the time a stack of +9 daggers is good enough.

I propose that we revise the overenchanting section so that it covers stackable weapons first, since stackable weapons are so much more suited to this strategy. The present text can be retained, or trimmed, but it should be secondary to the case of stackable weapons. djao 07:53, July 5, 2010 (UTC)

Some people overenchant darts, as they are plentiful, you can carry a huge stack, and they can polymorph into silver daggers, katanas, the future Excalibur/Sting/Orcrist etc. Tjr 12:25, July 5, 2010 (UTC)

Shouldn't you note the markers by #name-ing them instead of dropping, since it doesn't take a turn? 220.255.2.125 06:40, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

Stacks have weird behavior with naming, but more importantly, separating one item from a stack via naming requires both dropping and picking up at least once, which will invariably take more turns than simply dropping a marker. -Ion frigate 06:56, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

Rustproofing when already at +7

If I read a non-cursed scroll while confused when the weapon is already at +7, does the weapon still have a chance to evaporate, or does it just gain the rustproofing? Chessnuts (talk) 02:28, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

The source code suggests that if you're confused, the part of the code that causes weapons to evaporate is not executed; this means it should be safe. It's similar for confused scrolls of enchant armor. --Bluescreenofdeath (talk) 08:46, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

Magicbane

You can also curse Magicbane, then engrave with it to reduce its enchantment. Useful if you don't have Drain Life. --216.252.195.246 22:43, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

Reducing artifact enchantment

Engraving with artifacts seems not to reduce enchantment level. I've tried to engrave with a +6 Grayswandir but all it says is that the weapon "gets dull" without actually changing it back to +5. --Pescepalla (talk) 15:52, 28 December 2021 (UTC)

You'll have to zap the drain life spell downwards while standing on it, or use a cursed scroll of enchant weapon --Jundavr (talk) 17:50, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
Actually, which version are you playing? I might need to check the source to see if other methods of disenchanting artifacts still work --Jundavr (talk) 17:54, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
Playing 3.7.0 on Hardfought. I'm just noting this because there's a note saying that to reduce enchantment you can engrave "one letter, if the weapon is edged." This seems not to be the case any longer on 3.7.x --Pescepalla (talk) 14:05, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
Looking at the code, you need to engrave two (or three) letters now. Incidentally, that means illiterates can no longer do that, although they can't enchant weapons either, so it's okay. Tomsod (talk) 18:40, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
This was a bug that was introduced when engraving was made an occupation for 3.7.0. It has been now been fixed. Cathartes (talk) 17:21, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
