(David's) Treasure zoos

In most versions I've played, treasure zoos are called David's treasure zoos. Any theories as to why this is? -- the above unsigned comment was written by Kahran042.

David's treasure zoo has been with us since Hack 1.0. In that version and Hack 1.0.1, you would always get a treasure zoo if your login name was "david". Perhaps a colleague of Andries Brouwer, who did much of the development of Hack. No one really knows.

Cockatrice nests

I've never seen a cockatrice nest. I imagine they'd be pretty scary. Any chance of an article from some master-strategists? --PeterGFin 03:15, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

By the time you see them, they are very useful. Seal them off with Elbereth, enter only with stealth to harvest one cockatrice corpse for large battles, such as the Castle, Fort Ludios, the Valley of the Dead, named demons' liars. This is useful if you can level teleport with control and obviously have levitation and a lizard corpse. --Tjr 16:48, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Odds

So, what are the odds of a certain level having any special room? --ZeroOne 21:42, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

How to re-temple a room

If you stone a priest, the temple becomes haunted. If you stone to flesh him (and possibly charm him), he will attend the altar again. I suppose this is a temple again? What happens if you transport the statue, say to a different altar or ex-temple? The altar has to (still) be the same alignment as the priest. What if it changed in between, say you have a helmet of opposite aligment and wanted cross-aligned artifacts? --Tjr 16:53, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Correction: he will come back peaceful, but won't attend the altar and will become hostile as soon as you #chat with him. --Tjr 12:22, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Dave's High Security Treasure Room

So I found this room that wasn't mentioned on the wiki at all, wanted to see if it was covered somewhere. On Dlevel 14 with a Dave's Treasure Room, there was also a Vault. Accessing the vault with the teleport in the usual way, I stole the gold and while there my autosearching found a portal. Entering the portal, I get the message "You've entered a high-security area, an alarm goes off"

This was an entire level, a dark big room with a couple of small brances, still Dlevel 14, completely filled with monsters, mostly soldiers, plus about 4-5 dragons. There was a throne room surrounded by a moat with giant eels, as well as a barracks with several chests. The soldiers were well armed with an amazing array of wands and potions. Oh, and there was gold pretty much everywhere.

Anybody seen this before? Does this always happen when a treasure zoo and a vault are on the same level? Is this covered elsewhere on the wiki?

This is Fort Ludios. 75.159.28.122 05:13, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Treasure Zoo Strategies

It might be wise to add strategies for defeating treasure zoos, like using Elbereth a few times. Could somebody more experienced write up a subsection for this? --Havvy 07:36, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

I fear only the Wizard of Yendor in Gehennom at the end of my life and the housecat in Sokoban's Treasure Room at the beginning. --FJH 03:15, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

throne rooms and extinction

So extinct / genocided Throne Room monsters will be replaced with ordinary random monsters; but what if all ordinary monsters that might be generated on that level are also extinct or genocided? In that case does the throne room fail to appear at all, or is it just an empty room with a chest and a throne in it, or does it generate some random monsters irrespective of extinction? Graveyards

Is it true that "Levels on which undead have ever been reverse genocided" are graveyards? I can't find any reference to it in the reverse genocide code (read.c, line 2321) --Ogmobot (talk) 05:39, 30 November 2019 (UTC)

No, AFAICT. Corrected. Pinkbeast (talk) 02:43, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

Layout overhaul

Hey everyone, the TODO asking for a more readable layout has been sitting around for a long time. I finally made a new layout. You can see it at User:Aximili/Test. Also most of the special rooms now have their own articles now.

Should we use the new layout? If so, any changes you might suggest? I'm not going to apply it unless at least a couple people comment, it would be a major change.

--Aximili (talk) 04:45, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

I like the new layout. Critiques of the data presented:
  • How about we just make pages for leprechaun hall, beehive, anthole, and barracks, and link them here like the rest? Then we can do away with the Messages column.
    • That should also probably get rid of the need for presenting where the page-less special rooms appear on special levels. The only thing left in the Notes column would be the genocided/extinct constraint on generation (which IMO is useful to keep on this page).
  • If fire ants, giant ants, and soldier ants are all genocided/extinct, antholes will not generate at all (it won't create an anthole full of random monsters).
  • Cockatrice nests don't generate if cockatrices are genocided/extinct.
  • Soldiers can't be genocided, so "if soldiers genocided/extinct" is less clear than necessary.

Thanks for your feedback, I've incorporated your suggestions into User:Aximili/Test. Might put it in Special room later if nobody complains.

Couple more things:
* I think you can remove the DOD template, as the page is pretty much completely replacing anything from Dylan's spoiler
* This should be tagged with the nethack-366 template since it's up to date with 3.6.6
* I have some other minor suggestions, but will just wait until the page is updated and then do them myself
