The Tentacle Staff is the Drow (or chaotic Elf) quest artifact in SLASH 6. It is the prize for completing the Drow quest, and is chaotic for wishing purposes. Its base item type is a quarterstaff. The Tentacle Staff and mentions of it can still be found in the source code of SLASH'EM and SlashTHEM;[1][2] a comment in the latter's code indicates that it may be used as a future crowning gift for player drow.[3]

Effects

The Tentacle Staff grants +8 to-hit, and deals +5 damage and drain levels from non-resistant targets. When carried, the Tentacle Staff grants magic resistance; when wielded, it additionally confers fast energy regeneration and half spell damage. When invoked, it allows the player to level teleport, similar to the Orb of Fate.

Messages

The writhing tentacles draw the life from <target>!
You hit a monster with The Tentacle Staff and drained a level from it.

dNetHack

The variant dNetHack contains a somewhat similar artifact flail named the Tentacle Rod, which is the quest artifact for Drow Priests, Rangers, Rogues, and Wizards that turn renegade on their racial quest (retooled from the original Drow quest). It lacks the Staff's drain life attack and other properties, but it can deal multiple attacks and inflict status ailments on targets; while wielded, it also decreases the chance of spell failure and absorbs curses.
