^ accesses the trap_id command. This command allows you to check the type of traps you have previously found (or triggered), in adjacent squares or your own. Unlike the ; far look command, it works even if the trap is covered by a monster or item, and thus not displayed on your screen.

The trap ID command is particularly useful in a few situations:

  • On the Plane of Water, an item will often end up on top of the portal. You may wish to know where the portal is without stepping into it and moving onto the Astral Plane immediately.
  • If a monster is not moving, you might be curious about why it is immobilized (which might affect your treatment of it).
