The lunatic is one of the player roles in NetHack. Lunatics can be humans, orcs or gnomes and can be Neutral or Chaotic.

Guidebook entry: You don't have to be crazy to quest for the Amulet... but it helps!

Hallucination

Lunatics are hallucinating at all times. This hallucination does not time out and cannot be cured by any of the normal means. For a lunatic, quaffing a potion of hallucination or eating a corpse that would ordinarily cause hallucination instead temporarily cures the hallucination for the same number of turns. Other circumstances that ordinarily cause hallucination (black lights, etc) instead have the effect of reading a blessed scroll of identify.

Quest

In the quest, you return to the Halls of Serenity, where the quest leader, the Chief Psychiatrist, attempts to persuade you to commit yourself to stay "just until your head clears up a little." If less than level 14, she is not especially worried and suggests that you might feel better on your own soon, but once you reach level 14 she becomes very concerned and insists that you undergo treatment in the Clinic, which is found deep within the Halls. In the Clinic, the quest nemesis is the Mad Doctor, who believes that you are a danger to society and attempts to kill you.
