The wooden stake is a starting item for the Undead Slayer in SLASH'EM. The Stake of Van Helsing is an artifact wooden stake.

A stake does 1d6 extra damage to any vampire, with additional 2 damage and 10% chance of instakilling if one of the following applies: you are an Undead Slayer, you have Expert proficiency in dagger, or the stake is the aforementioned artifact.

Generation

Wooden stakes do not generate randomly in SLASH'EM.

The undead slayer role always starts with a +0 wooden stake.

Variants

SLASHTHEM

Wooden stakes can generate randomly in the dungeon with a rare frequency.

Hack'EM

  • Wooden stakes are instead just known as "stakes" and can generate in these materials: WOOD, MINERAL, IRON, METAL, MITHRIL, BONE, COPPER, and SILVER.
  • Stakes can generate randomly in the dungeon with a fairly rare frequency.
  • Base cost of 20 instead of 50.
  • Stakes get a +1 to-hit bonus vs vampires.
  • Untrapping a spear trap has a chance of yielding a stake.

Bonus insta-kills vs vampires:

These bonuses all stack, as demonstrated below:

  • No skill in dagger = 10% chance of instakill
  • Basic in dagger = 20% chance of instakill
  • Skilled in dagger = 30% chance of instakill
  • Expert in dagger = 40% chance of instakill
  • Expert in dagger and an undead slayer = 50% chance of instakill
  • Expert in dagger and an undead slayer wielding the Stake of Van Helsing = 60% chance of instakill

If you don't get the instakill, you still always get a bonus +1d6 damage vs the vampire like in SLASH'EM. Instead of +2 you get a bonus based on the above bonuses. Just take the probability of instakill and divide by 10 for the damage bonus.

  • Monsters wielding stakes always have a 20% instakill rate against you if you are a vampire.
  • Vampires are not vulnerable to stakes while in different forms (like vampire bats).
