Camperstriker quest

From NetHackWiki
Jump to: navigation, search

The Camperstriker quest sees you fighting Arabella for the Amulet of Kings. The quest leader is Marc.

Beware: Any means of level teleportation are disabled for the player as long as they are on the quest. Don't try to use e.g. a cursed scroll of teleportation for escaping!

Maps

Home level: Tiny Hamlet

You arrive in the middle of the village. Marc, your quest leader, waits to the east; there are also some attendants and a hostile hill giant shaman named Hrungnir. Taking out the hill giant quickly is recommended as it will otherwise cast spells and summon monsters. The village also has a fountain, two shops and a temple. Beware the drawbridge; it's recommended to either use a wand of striking or dig through the walls in order to reach the downstairs.

This level is no-teleport and has undiggable floors. It also has five random traps and three smart trappers on generation.

All the rooms on this level are underground rivers, which are seeded with random trees, fountains, pools etc. The upper filler levels have lots of fountains, but also some random monsters and traps. Every pool square has a small chance of containing a sea monster. Stairs are placed randomly on the level, so the player will probably have to do some digging. Don't fall in the lethe water! There are 10 smart trappers placed somewhere on this level.

The empty spaces in the center of this level hold four statues and four statue traps. This level is also no-teleport, and the player is likely to need an axe in order to chop the trees and move around. Polymorphing into a form that can fly over the trees will also work. Those who have a good standing with their god may try praying in order to get teleported to a random empty location, but with that method you'll rarely end up where you want, and you need to be surrounded by trees in order for it to work.

Stairs are randomly placed on this level, as well as 120 statues and 120 statue traps. A method of detecting all the traps will be very useful here; alternately, the player may check the identities of statues and only step on those representing weak monsters. There are also 20 random traps and 20 smart trappers placed on this level.

The big room to the bottom is an inside room with lots of random terrain, nasty traps and certain dangerous monsters. Also, each of the three towers contains a ton of random @, which will instantly surround the player on arrival.

You appear in the top-left tower, and Arabella will be somewhere in the chaotic lower part of the level. Her exact starting location is random, but she will always start on top of the Amulet of Kings quest artifact. Arabella will wait for you to come, so you need to dig, teleport or wallwalk in order to reach her, or find some other method to wake her up.

Scattered around the level are lots of random monsters and traps, including heaps of shit that can slow down the player and damage worn boots. There's also Arabella's friends to spawn on some random empty location when the level is loaded: those are Anastasia, Henrietta, Katrin and Jana, all of which would be dangerous quest nemeses all by themselves. They are not covetous but more than capable of posing a challenge with their various special attacks and spells.

There's also several dozen trapper kings on this level.

Messages

The quest messages for the Camperstriker are based on Castle of the Winds, a roguelike game, as well as Marc's Abenteuer, a book written in German language that tells of people playing a fictitious roguelike named SPACE WARS.

In this quest, the dialogue shows that your quest leader and nemesis are capable of breaking the fourth wall. Arabella is also noticable because she's the only(?) nemesis who doesn't seem to hate and despise your character.

"Label the messages"

You remember this place... it's the location where Camperstrike games
usually start.
And you know that Camperstrike is a difficult game from start to finish,
so this is a dangerous place, yet there are much greater dangers still
ahead.
Of course Marc is here to see you fail! But you need to prove that you
are actually able to play Camperstrike!
Once again, you are back at Tiny Hamlet.
You are back at Tiny Hamlet.
You have an odd feeling this may be the last time you ever come here.
"You don't even know how to play, %r!"
"A %r thinks they can play Camperstrike? Ha ha ha!"
"Marc would totally stomp you if you were to engage him in a real game!"
"Arabella will stomp you too if you even manage to reach her! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"
"Sucky players like you, begone!"
"WHAT? You defeated Arabella? This is impossible!"
"Honestly, I didn't expect you to be able to play after all!"
"Well done, I guess you're not as stupid as you look."
"Marc had already dug a grave for you but it seems that it won't be needed."
"Our grandmaster can't believe that you managed to beat Arabella.
And I can't, either."
"What? YOU think you're good at Camperstrike? Don't make me laugh.

Really now. Come on, you'll never even reach her, let alone beat her in
a real game. She will probably instakill you on her first move.

You're a fool if you insist that you can take her! Let's check your
'abilities', and maybe I will see if you're able to last more than two
rounds against her!"
"Why are you here again? I don't need to test your abilities to see
whether you're able to beat Arabella! I can tell you right now that you're
not! But if you insist, I'll waste some more of my precious time... *sigh*"
"Alright, this is the last time I'll tell you that you're not ready.
From then on, you can just bugger off and leave me alone."
"As I said, I won't help noobs like you. My time is too precious
for it to be wasted needlessly. Bye!"
"As I expected. Your hit points are too low, you're wearing way too
many cursed items and I see you're lacking most important intrinsics
and resistances, too! Go ahead if you like, but you'll probably die
on the next level. You certainly won't reach Arabella in one piece."
"Well, I'll give your character about... let's say three turns, and if
you're still on the same level as Arabella then she'll kill you. Better
hope that you can take her out faster than that, but with your crap
equipment...

Anyway, don't sweat it! You're just not good enough at this game yet,
so better get that character killed off now and roll a new, better one!"
"Your character doesn't look too bad to me, if I have to be honest...
Let's see: moderately good hit points, bad AC but you might just try to
kill everything faster than it can kill you, and you also have some
important intrinsics.

Of course there's still lots of holes in your current setup, but it's
probably not going to get any better considering your low playing skill,
so I'd go forth and fight Arabella now if I were you. There's still about
a 98%% chance that you'll die, but who knows...

Oh, you need hints too? Should have known that you didn't read spoilers.
Well, first you need to get past the underground river, and then make it
past some more levels until you reach Arabella and her special rooms."
"You won't beat Arabella, but you'll try anyway, right?"

The following messages are false advice. Following these will lead to YASD.

"Free advice! Wearing gloves of fumbling improves your pick-axe!"

In reality, they will prevent the player from digging successfully.

"Pack as many scrolls of tele level as you can - they're really useful!"

They won't work on the quest if read by the player.

"The Statue Halls can only spawn statue traps. Other trap types won't be generated there."

They can, just like anywhere else.

"Traps can only appear on open floor squares. Everything else is safe."

Especially the inside room on the final quest level can have traps on water, lava, trees etc.

"If you accidentally wake up trappers, the best thing to do is to run away real fast."

Doing so will cause them to use their scrolls/wands of trap creation. The better thing to do would be killing them quickly and then detecting traps instead of running into them.

"If Arabella's friends start attacking you, ignore them. Their attacks are puny."

Each of them is basically a full-blown quest nemesis with lots of special attacks and spellcasting. They are not covetous, but all of them have wallwalking so outrunning them will be difficult.

"Arabella is guaranteed to spawn with a wand. Getting hit by their wand will be beneficial for you."

The wand will send the player away, possibly dumping them in the Gehennom; sometimes the game will also panic, segfault or freeze.

"The Underground River? Well, you'll want to swim in that water, there's useful items hidden on the bottom!"

Coming into contact with Lethe water is never a good idea, except maybe if there's a wand of wishing in there. In this case, the only thing that will probably be found in there is kelp fronds.

"What? The temple of Moloch? That's where you can buy divine protection, dummy!"

The priest starts out hostile. Trying to chat to him will just waste a turn, allowing the priest to attack the player.

After traversing the Underground River, you reach a place
that somehow reminds you of the Hamlet.

But... why are there so many trees here?

You quickly realize there's got to be something wrong here.
Once again, you enter a weird version of the Hamlet that you used to see at the start of your adventures.
Finally. You've made it past the terrifying statue halls,
and this place has got to be Inside Part.

Arabella uses this level as her personal hiding place, and filled it
with nasty stuff of all sorts. Where is she?
Once again, you enter Inside Part, ready to defeat Arabella.
"Oh! Greetings, %p! Well met. I'm Arabella, and I'm your opponent
for today's match.
May the better one of us win!
Actually, I already know that I will win. Sorry, but I can see that
you're a cakewalk opponent."
"The Inside Part? Come on, you don't know how to play and survive in there at all!"
"Wondering why I didn't instakill you yet? Well, I'm charging my mana for the next devastating spell."
"That weak amulet will be of no use to you, %p. There are much better amulets in this game; you should wear one of them instead."
"My array of powerful spells can instakill you, or screw up your character so that you're bound to die in a few turns."
"Can you still open your inventory? I think I'll prevent you from doing that now."
"You know that if you lose to me, I will break your shins with my Asian girl boots, right?"
"Specially for you, I stepped into a heap of dog shit. You will have to clean my profiled boots after I defeated you."
"So far, Marc is the only person who ever managed to defeat me. And it will stay that way."
"My mentor will be very displeased if I allow you to beat me, so expect me to reduce your HP to 0 any moment now!"
"more tsprecher deactivated, correct messages about radio are through-said!"
"Well. It seems I need to fill the map with even more traps in order to stop you."
"I need to recharge my wand of banishment. Please wait, %p."
"What are you saying, you're not using Windows 3.1? But that's the only operating system suitable for playing Camperstrike!"
So Arabella's artifact was an amulet of drain resistance, called
the Amulet of Kings. It doesn't seem to do all that much apart
from conveying drain resistance, but maybe you need to activate
it in some way...
Arabella has been defeated by %p.

With her player character avatar disappearing from your screen,
she speaks:
"No, it can't be! This is impossible!!!

...

Well, a loss is a loss, and I hereby congratulate you.
But I'd really like to watch the replay of this game to see how you
managed to beat me. I really hope you didn't use cheats, as that would
be against the rules.

Anyway, you may take the silver bell now and go on with your game.
Good luck, and happy ascending!"
Marc speaks:

"%p... you actually managed to beat Arabella???

Uh... I didn't expect anyone to be capable of defeating her,
apart from me of course, but you have done it. I am impressed.
Even more so since I expected you to be a very bad player.

Of course you can keep the Amulet of Kings and the Bell of Opening,
since I have no use for them anyway. After all, I've managed to beat
Arabella and all four of her friends teamed up against me - I tell
you, that was a long, grueling battle! Sure, I had that fellow Sizzle
helping me, but still... oh wait, I guess you don't want to hear about
my old stories.

Yeah; well done, %p. Your victory shows that not all new Camperstrike
players actually suck. I still can't believe that you did it, but I've
been watching your ttyrec while you were playing.
And I gotta admit, even though she gave it her best, zapping you with
her wand repeatedly and casting nasty spell after nasty spell, you
discovered a nifty way of killing her. I never thought that method
would even be able to defeat her at all, since a master player like her
is too good to fall for such a weak tactic, but...

Anyway, see you soon!"
"Don't use that amulet. It sucks. Use an amulet of covetous warning
instead if you have one!"

The quest artifact conveys drain resistance, which is actually a must-have property for the ascension kit.

"%p! Long time no see! Arabella is still training for a rematch, so
maybe one day you'll be able to challenge her again. However, she
keeps complaining about not finding any worthy opponents."
"I'll tell you something, %p! Arabella really wants to rematch you
in a new game, so go ahead and win this one! Then come back here
and battle her again. She told me that she'd really like to use her
female hugging boots as lethal weapons, since your shins look like
they'll really enjoy pain.

Don't look at me like this, that's what she said!"
"Conversion is costly. I certainly won't help you no more."
You receive a faint telepathic message from %l:
Come to my camp at %H, I've got a surprise for you!
Look for a ...ic transporter.
You couldn't quite make out that last message.
You again sense %l inviting you for a surprise.
"%p, your fight with Arabella isn't over yet!
Go back and defeat her if you want to impress me!
She has a silver bell that you need to obtain.
I'm starting to believe that you can actually win, but only if you
actually do so will you be able to convince me of your ability as a player!"
