Move this page?


I propose moving this page to Spellcasting (SLASH'EM) as part of a move to try and standardise the names of SLASH'EM pages. This follows the scheme of pages such as Pet (SLASH'EM) and also the convention used by Wikipedia (which we don't have to follow, but frequently it makes sense). It also allows quicker formation of links e.g. [[Spellcasting (SLASH'EM)|]] gives Spellcasting (it's autocompleted when the page is saved) --Rogerb-on-NAO 23:00, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Spell recommendations

Is Acidstream a good spell? I found a magic marker

I assume you are a Lucky wizard who can write any spellbook with reasonable rates of success. In that case, consider magic missile, charm monster and other powerful spells. I don't know too much about SLASH'EM, so I'm going to stop here. -Tjr 15:51, December 28, 2009 (UTC)

Other differences

Just added a section on the changed timeout rules for spellcasting. However there are a large number of other differences that have no mention at all. For example,

  • Spellbooks have charges. In vanilla, there's a #DEFINE for the max number of times a book can be read instead.
  • All body armor except robes increase the cast penalty, although not as much as iron body armor
  • The effects of some of the techniques, i.e. sigil of control, should probably be mentioned in this article.

Then there's all the new spellbooks with missing pages.

I don't have SLASH'EM on my local machine so I can't do wizard mode, and I've only played a handful of games. It'd be nice if someone could flesh out more of the SLASH'EM pages. -- Qazmlpok 14:22, March 14, 2010 (UTC)

Something else I noticed

When I try to cast a spell with insufficient power, I got the message Continue? [yn] (n). When I answer y, the spell is cast dealing damage to me instead of removing power. This is not mentioned here. What exactly is happening? 720 11:13, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

If you're sufficiently skilled, you can cast spells from health if you lack power. To my knowledge there aren't any other negative effects, just the damage. I'll do some codediving later today and add a section to the article. -- Qazmlpok 11:59, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Spell Skill enhancement nerfed

In Weapon.c the slots_required() function is different for Spell skills than in nethack. It nerfs Spellcasting by requiring 2 slots to go from basic to skilled (rather than 1) and 3 slots to go from skilled to expert (rather than 2). If your strategy is a spellcasting wizard, you'll need to get the character much higher level before you can use the higher level spells. Potential catch-22 - if you need those higher level spells to get the character to higher experience levels.

This difference needs to be documented somewhere in the SLASHEM wiki pages. - fizzbinary Sep 25 2011
