Savefile compatibility

What's the source for the sentence "it will not be savefile compatible"? --ZeroOne 07:11, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

I think it's just an observation that incrementing the minor number (3.X++) has always broken savefile compatibility; indeed, this can be one of the criteria for determining whether a new release is a minor update (3.X++) or a bugfix update (3.X.Y++). --Eidolos 07:14, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Pat might be alive, but that doesn't say anything about how alive the development process is. The 3.4.x series stopped suddenly after a few releases that looked liked normal bug fix releases. Bugs piled up afterwards. After so many years, I wouldn't hold my breath that even my grand children will see another Vanilla NetHack release. Go play a Variant. --Bhaak 17:07, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Citation for claim that next version is 3.7.0?

Lede says next version is 3.7.0. First, "is" is wrong. We just do not know. Second, this claim is not backed by a citation to nethack.org or rgrn or any other place the devteam speaks with authority. Third, this lede has been here since December 15 2019, so it's been wrong 4 times already. 3.6.4, 3.6.5, 3.6.6, 3.6.7 were released after this lede was committed.

Does anyone have evidence to offer about this? If not, then after a week or so, I will rewrite the lede. Something like:

The current version of NetHack is NetHack 3.6.7. Based on external observation, it is likely that the next version will be either 3.6.8 (which would very likely be a small bugfix release) or 3.7.0 (which would be a major feature release).

Github is authoritative evidence, all right! And on https://github.com/NetHack/NetHack I see the README talking about 3.7. But it doesn't say that 3.7 will be the next release. Just that 3.7 is a work in progress. It doesn't say at all that the next release has to be 3.7.0 (rather than a 3.6.8). Furey (talk) 05:28, 3 June 2024 (UTC)

3.7 was in development while 3.6.6 was originally the latest stable - the latter was only updated to 3.6.7 specifically to address a serious security flaw. Barring another discovery of that nature, I'm not seeing much reason to believe 3.6.8 has a non-zero chance of existing. --Umbire the Phantom (talk) 05:32, 3 June 2024 (UTC)

The lede asserting 3.7.0 has already been wrong four times. The current version was 3.6.3 when this lede was committed, and there have been four releases since then, none of which were 3.7.0. Every time it's wrong, one could say "this is the last time it will be wrong", and someday it really will be the last time it was wrong. But after having a flat claim that's been wrong four times since its inception in December 2019, I'd like to rewrite a lede with such a history of wrongness. Furey (talk) 05:39, 3 June 2024 (UTC)
