An artifact is a rare and unique object. NetHack players like to wish for artifacts (using wand of wishing). Some players sacrifice to their god because gods sometimes provide artifacts as gifts.
Note that the correct English spelling of the word is 'artefact', but the spelling 'artifact' occurs all through the source code.
