A candle of invocation is a type of tool that appears in dNetHack and notdNetHack. It is made of wax and appears as a runed candle when unidentified.
Generation
In addition to random generation, general shops, lighting shops and hardware stores can sell candles of invocation.
A candle of invocation will generate on the altar within the Valley of the Dead if the ring of wishes generated at the Castle only has one charge.
Description
Applying a non-cursed candle of invocation will light it - a cursed candle cannot be lit, but will not be consumed if attempting to light it. A lit candle of invocation will never burn out, and invoking the lit candle will allow the character to summon an extraplanar being from a set of menus, which consumes the candle afterward:
- A djinni can be summoned, which will immediately grant a wish to the summoner.
- An angel, demon, fey, or primordial can be summoned as a tame servant.
- A hostile demon lord can be summoned, with the demon lord being selected by input from another menu.
Strategy
A lit candle of invocation is a useful light source for Gehennom and other dark levels, but its primary use for a majority of characters is to summon a monster and either wish for a particular item or else shoot for a demon lord's particular equipment. For a character seeking to summon a pet, see the pet article for suggestions.
