The Chromatic Dragon, D, is the Caveman quest nemesis. It possesses the breath attacks of all of the other types of dragon as well as their resistances (and grants one at random if you eat the corpse).
An annoying part of the caveman quest is that to get to the first downstair, as well as other rooms below, you need to squeeze through tight spaces diagonally. Remove and drop all of your armor (except for maybe your Boots of speed and/or Gauntlets of power) and take out and drop unessential items from your bag of holding, until you can fit through while carrying it. Drop your BoH on the other side and go back to collect your armor. You should be able to fit through full armored.
Strategy
The Chromatic Dragon respects Elbereth and teleports to the upstair when wounded, so standing on an upstair with the E-word on it is an easy way to defeat The Chromatic Dragon. Make sure to have a way to uncurse items in your inventory, as it can curse you.
