A cloud, #Cloud.png, is a dungeon feature that appears in NetHack.

Generation

Clouds appear in the following areas:

  • The home and locate levels of the Wizard quest
  • Variations #1, #8 and #10 of the Big Room (dependent on chance), and
  • The Plane of Air, where far larger clouds appear.

Description

Clouds allow unobstructed passage, but block line of sight - while inside a cloud square, you can see out of it, although clouds in adjacent squares will block your vision as normal.

The following information pertains to an upcoming version (3.7.0). If this version is now released, please verify that it is still accurate, then update the page to incorporate this information.

One of the themed rooms introduced in this version has a chance to generate a cloud at the center of the room.

Plane of Air

Clouds on the Plane of Air move around and are occasionally subject to storms, which emit rays of lightning. If you are inside the clouds when lightning strikes, you are paralyzed for a few turns - this cannot be prevented with free action.

History

Clouds first appear in NetHack 3.1.0, when the Quest branch, the Big Room and the Elemental Planes were introduced to the game.

Variants

Variants tend to make clouds somewhat more common in the dungeon.

Lethe patch

In the Lethe patch, the Lethe Gorge's seventh level has some small clouds near the temple in the northwest.

Biodiversity patch

The biodiversity patch's retool of the Priest quest has a home level for

SLASH'EM

The SLASH'EM Lawful Quest has a large cloud bank as its third section.

UnNetHack

In UnNetHack, some randomly generated rooms may have clouds within them. Clouds are also sometimes generated within the lower levels of Sheol.

Encyclopedia entry

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
