Deafness is a status effect implemented in Nethack 3.6.0. Being deaf will prevent you from hearing things, although some sources may give alternate messages instead. There is no status line message indicating that you are currently deaf.
Stethoscopes will not function while deaf.
Causes
- Apply a cursed unicorn horn
- Step onto a magic trap.
- Being inside a cloud during a thunderstorm on the plane of air.
- Beating a leather drum or uncharged drum of earthquake.
- Falling unconcious from eating rotten food.
- Falling asleep, e.g. from a trap or wand.
Cures
- Apply a non-cursed unicorn horn
- Being given a guardian angel when entering the astral plane (50% chance)
- Waking up from fainting (50% chance).
- Waking up from sleep (50% chance).
