Displacement is the property of having your image appear somewhere other than where you actually are; in other words, monsters think you are a tile or two away from where you actually are. This makes it very difficult for monsters to hit you, and the cloak of displacement, which is currently the only way this property can be obtained, is prized in the early game for it.

In addition, if you move onto a square currently occupied by your pet, you will recieve a message informing you that the pet has been displaced. This simpily moves the pet a square or two away.
