A gecko, :, is a monster that appears in NetHack. It is encountered in the earliest dungeon floors, and is one of the first : the player may encounter.
Chatting to a gecko while hallucinating gives YAFM.[1][2]
Strategy
Even for a starting player, geckos are fairly harmless to deal with unless they are low on HP.
