Grue's Cavern

Grue's Cavern is a special level that appears in dnethack and serves as a replacement for Medusa's Island. Medusa is replaced by the Grue, a reference to the classic Zork video game. The entire level is non-teleport, and shrouded in darkness, another reference to Zork's Grue, which would kill the player if he or she attempted to travel in darkness.

Common traits

Each version of the level contains 18 candles embedded in the walls, two chunks of fossil dark, nine to 11 traps, and various random items. The candles can be worth collecting as light sources can generally be used to drive the Grue away.

Each level also includes the corpse of an unlucky Elvish adventurer devoured by the Grue and his or her leftover equipment, including either a cloak of invisibility or a cloak of displacement.

The Grue will spawn asleep on the downstairs.
